Krag Sporting Rifle
      #347891 - 14/12/20 04:05 AM

I had been trolling for images of Krag sporters (not an unusual pursuit) when I found this one for sale.

It's very handy, nicely done, and it's accurate with the only load that I've yet put through it.

The action metal was properly made off before blacking. Notice the checkered steel buttplate, Lyman-48 aperture sight, Pacific banded ramp front sight, and it at one point the 25" barrel had been fitted with dovetail blocks for something like a Lyman 5-A field scope.

The wood is solid, the checkering is very nice, the inletting was done by a man not a machine.

So far the only marking I've seen on the rifle besides the Springfield Armory markings is a pair of point stampings and the number 50 inside the toe of the steel buttplate.

I don't know who built the rifle.

I'm looking at getting a Malcolm 6x scope and mounts to put on dovetail blocks for it, and I might actually have one before Christmas. We'll see.

In the meantime I'll be shooting it.
It has/had a bonafide patina and burnished grime from decades of service and handling. I gently freed up the adjustments for the Lyman-48 to get it set for zero and further running of the slide and fine elevation knob. I shoot at extended range here at home and I'll be exercising this rifle on steel to at least 600 yards for right now and further as I get it up to speed.

Hopefully I'll get a good cast bullet load going for it without too much effort. Cross a finger for me. Feel free to share your 30 caliber cast bullet wisdom with me. Get preachy if you feel so inclined.

If anyone has an idea as to who built it, also feel free to comment.

I "take it" this rifle is in .30/40 Krag?
The Lyman #311334 (about 200gr.) might be a good "number" for this rifle.

Hi Daryl

I hope all is well with you and your family up there.

Yes this rifle runs the 30 Army
I don't have a large selection of moulds for the 300 bore, with my selection being both old Ideal moulds - a 311-284 and a 308-375

The 311-284 was designed for the Krag. It produces long round nosed gas checked bullets weighing right about 219 grains, sized, checked, and lubed. Mine is a two cavity mould, and it had been throwing bullets featuring an undersized bore rider section.
I've lapped one of the cavaties up to 301 and I'll be running those in this rifle soon. That bore rider section had been 299 and wasn't working out with any of the three Krags here.

The 308-375 is also a gas check, bore rider type mould, but it's a single cavity mould that throws a shorter spitzer shaped bullet weighing right about 170 grains. It's bore rider section comes out to 301
The bullet looks much like the 311334, only not as long

I size them at 311, which is about as big a bullet as will fit in the neck of a fired case from any of these rifles here.

If you have a spare set of 311334 blocks, send them down here and I'll give it a go.

AND, where did you find that snow?? Been around long??

Its been usually warm and dry here..was 57F here last Wednesday and Thursday..

Cool up here at the ranch today..had a touch of snow last night.. worked today building a wind fence for when calving starts

Hope all is well with you and yours

Things are good.
That snow is a come and go kind of thing this weekend. Hopefully tomorrow morning won't be an ice skating rink on the roads in town.

JBM says that bullet is still doing 1430 at 600, so for jollies on steel it should be fine.
The first time that I had the front sight on the 9x15 inch 400 yard steel I heard it ring.

I think that the Malcolm scope on micrometer mounts should help seeing the targets. We shall see how that works out for me.

I don't think so, I do have a few .30 cal moulds, and will have a look. I know one is a Saeco mould casting around 200gr., seems to me. Also, the 180gr. RCBS in DC - long shank bullet, short flat nose, better as a hunting bullet.

Sun had already gone down by the time I got home, but there was still enough light in the sky to establish a zero for this new setup.

The existing dovetail block mounting holes were 7.200" CtC, so I rummaged through the pile of dusty old blocks at the shop and selected a pair that were close for a level installation.
I machined the front block to maximize the range of vertical adjustment in the mounts that came with this Malcolm scope.
Collumnated it at the shop.

I got the zero that I wanted in two shots at 100 yards.
Last weekend I'd generated a dope chart on the JBM Ballistics web based utility for running the Lyman-48 receiver sight. Tonight's atmosphere was close enough to the data in the chart, so I just dialed in the elevation dope and fired at the 9x15 steel downrange at 400 yards.

"...Ping!.."

Subsequent shots connected with steel.

Il be back at it this weekend.
Not so bad.

Wonderful, John - so excited for you. Does the scope slide forward on recoil, then have to be pulled back before firing the next shot, or is it solidly mounted?
Good looking rig!!

Daryl yes it's a recoil mount.

The Malcolm folks have a few different mount options and features. They offer a spring kit for return to battery, as well as stop rings to keep the scope from moving.

I might end up with a spring assembly.

And yes I agree, this is one nice looking rig, although I must admit, that white line spacer sours my gut. I will likely replace it in the very near future with something more fitting of the classy looks of the rest of the rifle.

John,

That's a fine rifle! Very nicely done.

As for the Malcolm scope, I notice the stop ring is on the wrong side of the front mount. It should be in front of the mount, not behind it.

Cheers,
Curl

Hello Curl

The rifle is a honey
I'll get more photos of it here

That stop ring needs to be where it is. It features a forward facing tang with a spade at it's end.
The scope doesn't have an integral rib. That tang acts as the alignment rib. The front ring features a groove at 12 O'clock, and that tang rides in the groove.

Scope is manually pulled back into battery position before the shot.
Recoil moves the rifle back, scope ends up sitting forward after the shot.

They feature a coil spring return on a different scope that they offer, and it can be supplied for this scope as well.

Take a peek at the page for the Malcolm 6x scope

There's a couple of images there that illustrate the factory prescribed installation.

Later on, springs were added to this type of scope.
Even Tasco made some up in the 60's or 70's. I had one of those, a modern rendition of the Unertl varmint scopes.

Unertl was a common spring assisted varmint scope, popular in some circles, back then and prior.

Confirmed zero on steel at 100, then 400

Moved over for the steel at 600 meters
Checked data on my JBM Ballistics data chart that I generated for this and gave it input relative to the JBM prescription.

Five shots, five impacts.
Things are going well so far.

On many (most) scopes that I've tracked here I end up having to calculate a correction factor for the grads on the scope dials. They almost always need a correction factor.
Not this one.

This is a very simple and "mathy" setup. Set the mounts up properly and there's no chance of getting it wrong.

So cool.

FWIW, the 180gr Sierra GameKing is still going 1400fps at impact.
Although I wouldn't bet on stellar performance on game with this bullet at that distance, I wouldn't want to stand in front of this piece of kit at that distance either.
Furthermore, this isn't a top load for the rifle with this bullet weight. It's going out at about 2200fps, so within acceptable pressure considerations there's another couple hundred FPS on tap.

The old Krag is doing ok.

I stand corrected. Malcolm uses a system different from what I am accustomed to. Both Unertl and Lyman put the thumb-screw stop ring in front of the forward mount. The rifle and mounts recoil under the scope, leaving the scope in a forward position after the shot is fired. The scope is then pulled back against the stop ring (if you don't have the return spring setup).

Here's a photo of my Stevens Mod. 44-1/2 in .38-55 with a 4x Unertl Small Game Scope attached:

Likewise, here's my Winchester Mod. 52C wearing a Unertl 15X Ultra-Varmint with the full return spring setup:

Anyway, I wasn't trying to be a smart-ass. I hope I didn't sound that way. Just trying to be helpful.

I really like that Krag. It is a classy rifle.

I just picked up a Krag sporter.

Not as cool as yours, Tinker, but a pretty good example of this type of rifle.
I have a Westley 1881 single and an 1895 Winchester in 30US already so getting this one going shouldn't be an issue.

....always wanted a Krag, still do, in 6.5x55 or converted to 303 British....the problem is everybody else wants one and the import costs are too prohibitive.

Here is a Griffin & Howe Krag in .25-35 Winchester. You may remember it from an auction in 2014 or 2015. I wish I had bought it. It was alleged to have been Seymour Griffin's personal deer rifle as I recall.
