Folks

A local auction mart is listing the following double rifle and I am interested in any information some of you may have in regards the maker and potential value of the rifle. The listing is as follows:

"Samuel Ebrall, Shrewbury, James under-lever back action hammer type double rifle in .450, 3 1/4 BPE cal. encased in orig. brass mounted leather, luggage style case. This gun is engraved overall in fine English scroll, w/sharp checkered walnut p/grip featuring fiddle-back finish, the blackened bbls. have a 3-leaf express sight, matted rib, w/elevated ramp to secure front sight. Bores appear exc.+"

I won't be able to look at it till the viewing the day before the auction a few weeks away, so do not know how tight the action is, etc. Any help (or even a point in the right direction of where to look) would be much appreciated as I am considering bidding on this rifle.

Thanks in advance.

Notes
In 1843 Samuel Ebrall purchased the business of William Horton of 4 Wyle Cop, Shrewsbury.
In 1845 he moved to 6 High Street, and in 1853 to Smithfield Road.

He was an exhibitor at the Great Exhibition in 1851, and he won a first class prize medal at the 1862 exhibition and was appointed gunmaker to Queen Victoria.

In about 1888 Samuel retired or died and the firm was taken over by his sons, the name became Ebrall Brothers.

The firm traded until at least 1891, a firm of the same name trades to date.

Samuel was the father of Richard Holland Ebrall of Hereford.

Hope this helps. Please ask the Internet Gun Club for more information if you like. They are associated with the Birmingham Proof House and would be able to help if you register there.

Best wishes and good hunting!
