India this December?
      #34727 - 16/07/05 09:06 PM

Seeing my wife was intending to go to China on a package tour, as I was going to be off to the Territory for Buffalo in August, I may have convinced her a trip to India in December or early January is a much better idea. And for a similar cost for both of us!

So we are currently looking at options on what to do in India and making plans.

Looking for suggestions from our forums members who are experienced in that great sub-continent.

I hope this will be a first scouting trip.

More details soon.

My wife has done a lot of research and put together a possible list of places to visit. I will detail some of this here later and see what our Indian members might say.

What I am really keen for is which Parks or places would be the best to visit for a wildlife safari / photography / filming etc?

For tiger as a principal "target". But also leopard, gaur, wild elephant, Indian rhino?, AND of course SAMBAR, chital, hog deer, barking deer etc etc

Comments very welcome.

It will only be a shortish trip but maybe a first and then ...

Thanks.

If this was a 100 years ago you would ask for hunting safaris instead....

But of course there was no internet at tnat time

NitroX,

There are several sanctuaries that you could visit - which parts of India do you plan on visiting? In the North and Central India you could check out Dudhwa, Ranthambhore, Corbett National Park etc whereas in the South there are Mudumalai, Bandipur etc. Lynx would be a good person to talk to about this and I shall send him and Rustam e-mails. As one of India's finest wildlife photographers, Lynx would know the best options - perhaps, you could meet him in Rajasthan when you travel and also visit his former hunting grounds and palace.

A good link for the wildlife parks in India, albeit a brief one. I'll get as much informationa s I can over the next couple of days - Ebenezer Stephen, a leading journalist and gun nut from the South is in touch with me on something that we are working on and I shall ask him to weigh in with his opinions as well.

Best wishes,

Hello John.

The majority of the animals you want to see, barring the Indian rhino, can be found in South India. The rhino can be seen in the Kaziranga national park (Google should bring something up).

I would have heartily recommended Lynx's place but with the tigers being wiped out of Sariska and Ranthambore proving to be a disappointment in recent times, your time would be better served in South India. However, if you find yourself in the Delhi area, Lynx's place would still be worth the trip.

Since it would be your first trip to South India, I would recommend you book with www.junglelodges.com/index.asp and make it a point of staying at the Kabini River Lodge. This was the hunting lodge of the Maharaja of Mysore. Please note that tiger and leopard sightings are a lottery. A three or four day visit should be sufficient. There are observation towers near salt licks where one can sit up at night for infra red photography, etc., however, special permission needs to be taken for this.

Since you are in this region, how about a spot of Mahseer fishing? I have applied for membership of WASI (Wildlife Association of South India) and hope to get it soon. WASI has a large enough stretch of water for Mahseer and I would be happy to have you as my guest - provided I haven't gone up north to Lynx's place.

One place you are almost guaranteed tiger sightings is Kanha Naional Park in Central India. From what Lynx tells me, some of the blighters have got so used to tourists, they almost pose for photographs.

Study the website given above and we will take it from there.

Regards.

Rustam

Hi Mehul.

Long time no see. Trust you have settled in by now?

Just so there are no disappointments to anyone going to Lynx's place, the main palace was taken over by the government and it's a bloody mess.

It is their Summer House that they are in the process of turning into a heritage resort and it should be ready later this year.

If your going to be here in the winters, I wouldn't mind making the trek up north, work permitting. Failing which, I have started fishing and we could spend a few days on the Cauvery.

All the best.

Rustam

Mehul and Rustam

Thanks for the replies.

So far we have been looking at the North West mostly. Of course doing the usual tourist sites. I hope it will be the first of several trips. Normally when we travel we don't aim to jump all around the place but spend time in one or two main regions. Less time "on the road" that way.

But depending on the ease and cost of travel, a 'jump' to another area for a second part of a trip might be possible.

I will see if I can add some of the ideas later tonight or tommorrow. At the moment it is only a rough plan and concept and can be changed of course. It is such a huge benefit to have knowledgable persons who can contribute information.

Nitro X.

If you want to do the usual tourist thing, I would recommend the North West (Rajasthan, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh for the Taj but more so Fatehpur Sikri). There's history all over India but the weather is better in this region during the winter months. Unfortunately, it's the peak tourist time for India, so be sure to book your accomodations as early as possible.

It would help if you could tell us the number of days you intend spending here.

Rustam

Just spoke to Lynx.

He has been doing a lot of travelling, mostly in rural India, so internet connections are a bit hit and miss. He should be home sometime in August and will reply then.

Nitrox, should you decide to go to India why don't you stop for a few days in Karachi,Pakistan. It will be the hunting season and i'll arrange a few good hunts for you. Also you will not have any accommodation problems as you can be my guest for as long as you want.We could also take a trip to the northern areas and show you the worlds highest mountains.Think about it.

Iqbal

Just saw your post. Unfortunately not this trip as it is mostly a holiday for my wife. I have done a lot of hunting this year.

Your sincere offer is very much appreciated and I thank you very much. I hope to visit you one day in the future, no doubt, as I hope to visit the region again not too long in the future.

I am sorry, I was away in August and only saw these posts tonight. I checked and I never received a PM. I will have to check my email on another PC.

Will send an email/PM in any case. We will be visiting your area of the country this tourist trip and it would be nice to meet up.

The tourist thingy is mainly a tour with own vehicle, driver and guide.

Any suggestions along the way would be very much appreciated. There may be some flexibility along the way, ie trade-offs.

It would be nice to meet a member or two as well if they are in the region(s) and/or available.

I have deliberately left off the actual dates of travel under discussion on the public board. To make plans for any meeting it should be one on one arrangements.

John,

Wonder where you are staying in Bandhavgarh National park. www.churhatkothi.com is a `exceptional jungle camp at Bandhavgarh National Park. The camp lies within 24 acres of beautiful forest, a short distance from the park entrance, and is the brainchild of renowned naturalist KK Singh and his son, Dhruv.

You have PM.
