I do as much of the Large Game hunting as I can with DR's but
I like to shoot the animals with different calibres - some of which
are not available in DR's.

you learn different things, it gives you depth as well as breadth
of experience.

Also, shooting Foxes and Roos from a vehicle under Spotlight
(shooting, not hunting) is not exactly condusive to using large
calibre double rifles.

I do most ofmy hunting with a Double. I also have a couple of small Bore Single shots that are also alot of fun. I have a few bolt guns but rarely use any of them, with the exception of my 404, anymore.

Most of my small game shooting is done with bolt action rifles and by far I do this the most. .22 Mag and .222 plus of course shotguns which are doubles.

Medium game hunting I again mainly do with bolt actions and a lever action. .30-06, .308, 6.5x55. Deer, pigs, goats, other game.

This may change a bit with my new rifle, a Tikka with stacked barrels in 9.3mm. If I can get say .30-06 barrels for it, then that will get a work out on medium game (in addition to the 9.3 mm barrel). The .30-06 with a scope may provide the ranges needed. Don't know yet.

On small game if I can get a .222/12g barrel it will be a lot of use.

For big game I use a .375 H&H bolt action plus my .450 double. My .450 has only started its hunting career.

On balance I use bolt actions mostly. This will change as I get the tools for the other jobs.

I have 3 doubles, a 9,3x74R, a 450/400 3 1/4" and a 450 No2.
I hunt with them quite a lot. I have taken game from turkeys, bobcat, deer, wild pigs, caribou, black bear, impala, civet cat, side striped jackel, baboon, kudu, waterbuck, klipspringer, buffalo, and elephant.
Doubles are my favorite hunting rifles. I could easily use doubles for all of my hunting.

I really don't have much desire to hunt with anything else. To me, most of the pleasure of the hunt is the rifle in my hands.

All my hunting is done with doubles if buffalo are on the cards, which is about 90% of the time. In this case, the Jeffery .400 gets about 60% of the action, a .577 Light Nitro gets about 20%, and my Manton .470 only gets about 10% to date, but its relatively 'new' so that will change. A couple of other doubles get maybe one hunt per year.

If buff are a no-no, then I usually take the opportunity to give my 1903 Mannlicher Schoenauer carbine a day out, it has been my all-time favourite bolt-gun for many years, kills way beyond its ballistics with the 160gr round-nose bullet.

Happily, the choice of hardware for a hunt becomes more difficult with each new purchase!

Like MARRAKAI, and the Capt and I do most of my hunting with double rifles, from jackrabbits to Hippo! I have, though, several double rifles in calibers from 9.3 to 470NE, and have, in the past had doubles as small as 22 Hornet, and as large as 577NE 3". Also like Marrakai, I have several bolt, and singleshots as well, and my favorite bolt rifle is a Mannlicher Shoenauer MCA 1961 rifle, chambered for 243 Winchester, but a close second are my verious bolt rifle chambered for 375 H&H. All the other rifles simply collect dust!

I try to do all my hunting with my 450/400.

That is until I get my 404 Jeffery!

I do much of my hunting with my 9.3 double rifle from deer in the east to bears in Alaska. Probably about 80-90% of my hunting is with my double rifle. I just picked up a Kodiak 58 muzzle loader so that percentage is about to increase! As long I know that I can limit my shots to under 175 yards or so I'll take the double rifle. If not, and thats not much of the time, I take my battered old 30-06 bolt action. To give you an example take last year:

Black bear in Alaska: 9.3 double
Whitetails in Virginia: 9.3 double
Mouflon where the adverage shot was 200 yards, I did take my 30-06. Some of the shots I could have pulled off with my 9.3 but it was a cull hunt with the understanding that we had to take as many animals as possible. So the bolt came along.

The real trick, as with any rifle hunting, is to know your rifle, and know the area and game to be hunted.
