5 day Mule deer hunt --in Badlands type terrain..
      #347006 - 21/11/20 12:35 AM

Just got back from a 5 day hunt in a badlands area that I have hunted for the last 29 years.. Didn't make it last year as one of my best friends died and I had many issues to take care of at that time for his family.

Was a great time.. saw numerous "good" bucks just not the one I was looking for..kicking myself a bit has I had a very heavy wide horned buck in my scope for about 3 minutes at 225 yards.. NO back fork, just a dagger.. should have probably taken him to get him out of the gene pool.. but, had I shot him my hunt and search for the other would have been over...

Lots of fun and laughs as I hunted with one of my best friends for 3 of the 5 days I was there.. Great scenery and good relaxation..It's a good physical hunt.. no level ground..you are either going up or down.. makes it that much more exciting as you never know whats over the next little rise..

Pulled my camper trailer over to the area.. I stayed in this overnight..then drive my atv to a trailhead and go hunting on foot for the day. Generally doing 6 to 12 mile loops per day depending on which direction I headed and what I encountered during the day..

Some Pronghorn has I was entering the area..just off the road

Also no shortage of prairie dogs in the area..as you can see, they completely devastate the vegetation ..

My weapon of choice on this hunt.. 28 Nosler custom--Defiant action, Proof barrel, Timney triger, CA carbon fiber stock.. all in weighs about 7.5 lbs.. shoots 1/4" groups..

Sandstone structures in the area are always fun to check out..

Nice pictures, RIPP. Antelope, prairie dog and hudus (sandstone sculptures), but no deer.
That last picture sure shows the start of the badlands. We have them in Southern Alberta and Sask. as well.
Nice rifle except for the plastic stock and oversized scope.
Naaa, just kidding, nice rig.

Getting old and needing the luxuries. But why not?

Australian White Hunter and ivory elephant hunter John Dawkins used to hunt in Tanzania from a caravan.

Must be getting ancient, was thinking one might be nice the other day ....

What are badlands? I have seen the term and see photos. I assume they are large areas of mixed broken country of low hills, gullies, ravines etc. Which are not mountains.

Lovely photos. At least YOU are getting out and doing some hunting during this ridiculous happening.

Stone mushrooms!

Caps of harder layer of stone, and weathering occurs underneath, making these unusual formations.

There is a "totem" in that stone wall.

What lovely countryside. Reminds me of a rough Northern Flinders sheep station block I hunted ages ago. Called "Mandarin" and one had to climb down a cliff into a grand canyon. Not a good block for sheep. But loved hunting there.

These are the full blown badlands.
Lots of dinosaur fossils are found in these areas, like around the Royal Tyrell Museum in Southern Alberta.
Badlands are called such as poor land for farming, I assume.
Oft times, where there is water, it is alkaline - undrinkable.

That's correct..Badlands were actually named originally as such by the native Americans..it has more hostile conditions..harsh environment..and yes lots of alkali water unfit for consumption..

Montana has one of the largest concentrations of dinosaur fossils in the US..jn fact the most complete T-Rex ever found was from MT...

What is a totem?

In Aboriginal culture, the "old people" or spirits reside in the landscape. One can see their images in stone, in hills, in the landscape.

Albert Namatjira landscape paintings often feature several totems in the hills and landscapes. For those that can see them.

Interesting the native Indians named them as Badlands. The lack of good water would definitely be a factor.

In Northern Australia in the Kakudu area and region the Aboriginals had country called "fever country". Not because of malaria which didn't exist there. Or bad water, there was plenty at least in the Wet. Later these areas coincided with known large areas of underground uranium deposits.

BTW.. I used that 28 Nosler to take a cow elk this weekend.. was 362 yards..so not a long shot..but was once again using 175gr Swift A-Frames.. took off the top of her heart.. lungs looks like they had been in a blender.. she ran about 50 yards and dropped end over end in a pile..exit wound was about size of a silver dollar..

Swift A-Frames have never let me down.. doesn't matter if the shot is 60 yards or 600 yards.. for elk I have never used a better bullet.. have used them in 7mm RUM, 300 RUM, 338 RUM and now 28 Nosler..usually, IF I do recover a bullet, they are around 90% weight retention..

Cool - congratulations. What does the .28 make for speed with the 175's?

For N American hunting its one of my favorite cartridges..

Usually load diff bullets for antelope or deer..but elk, I stick with the Swifts...

Less recoil than the 300RUM, super flat shooting and a lightwight very accurate rifle..

So its a 7mm and based on what parent cartridge? .404 or ?

Must be a big case for that velocity.

Funny no one uses or talks about the 7mm Rem Mag anymore?

Yes...like the RUM's it is based on the .404 however the case is approx .03 shorter than the RUM's..

The 7mm Rem is still alive and well in Montana.. very popular for elk hunters.. many, including myself, are attempting to reinvent the wheel.. ..

I had this conversation last weekend with some hunters. Inside 400 yards, where still the bulk of shots are made, there is no real advantage to any of the new fad cartridges in my opinion..but, I like to experiment and try different things.. so???

I really like the 6.5 PRC.. light kicking round.. can call your shot on game..but really, it's still about 100 fps slower than the .264 Win Mag.. suppose to be a more "efficient" round..well, if it's so damn efficient why is it still slower than a cartridge designed over 50 years ago??
