The full-wood stock was a popular option by all accounts.
I have seen more of them in Australia than the half-stock version over the past 1/4-century.

Current bunch of vintage Sakos on OzGunSales are making a liar out of me!

All half-stocked. There's one L-46 .222 amongst them. Asking good money...

Mines a sako 461 , great little calibre and rifle. Gets a bit of use occasionally. Accuracy is awesome. 50 grain nosler shots , BM2 Heres a couple of pics. Cheers Mick

Good stuff, Mick.
Full-stock Sakos are nice things.

Is the 461 a two-piece fore-end like the L-46?

Bit of Aussie Top End trivia:
the two previous owners of mine, Kurt Mussiger and Eric Rhinelander, used it on buffalo pretty regularly in the good ol'days. The old trick of getting them to look to the side a bit, and shooting them in the eye.
Crazy Krauts!

I still have a partial box of the bullets they loaded specifically for the purpose: Speer 55gr FMJ #1045.
Long gone from the catalogue by the looks, but Speer still do a 55gr TMJ apparently.
Not recommending the practice of course, just sayin'...

Buy a new pristine rifle in the 1980's for $400, and sell it in 2020,m used, barrel worn for $2000 or $3000.

http://www.ozgunsales.com/listing/81952/remington_788_308_bolt_face.html

I was going to joke how much is my Rem 788 clunker worth and see a Rem 788 .222 bolt is worth the same as I paid for the whole rifle in 1982 or thereabouts. ie $200.

I have to say I would rather spend $2000 on an old vintage Sako like a L461 Vixen, a Finnbear or the other models. Rather than the modern rubbish at similar inflated prices people are paying for the modern crop of rubbish.

Walnut stocks for a start not plastic cheap arse rubbish. Well made actions and barrels, better designs. Not made for economy.

Very nice rifle Mick!
Mick & Marrakai; could you explain what are the main differences between Sako models 46 & 461 as from the distance both look pretty similar?

L46 has a rolling safety-catch on the box-shaped bolt shroud;
L461 has a sliding trigger safety, completely different shroud and cocking piece, nicer shape.

They probly have different magazine/floorplate arrangement as well.

L46 introduced not long after war's end, around 1949 I believe (but .222 cartridge not introduced until ~1952?)

L461 introduced in early 1962 as far as I can determine.

Louis:
The dates of introduction of the two models may be even simpler than I thought:

L-46 is 1946
L-461 is 1961

Those are the design dates I assume, not necessarily production dates.

The L461 has a a fixed staggered column magazine with hinged floorplate where the L46 has a detachable magazine. stock is also slimmer on the L46. Unsure if the L461 stock is 2. piece . Marrakis covered the bolt and safety differences
The L461 still feels very nice in the hand.
Both fine rifles.

John:
According to "Sako Model History (Europe)" on Wikipedia, the initial chambering was 7x33 Sako but by end of production the L-46 was factory-chambered for the following long list of cartridges:
5.6×35mmR, .22 Hornet, .218 Bee, .222 Rem, .222 Rem Mag, .25-20 Win, 7×33mm Sako, .32-20 Win

The L-461 had a somewhat shorter list:
17 Rem, .222 Rem, .222 Rem Mag, .223 Rem

Both fine rifles.

My interest in the 222 started with my nephew buying a 243 In a fullwood 579. Very nice as well. Same again its very accurate. Blows all the theories on barrel contact and pressure points with stock.
Joey has claimed the L461 as hers...........

What was the 7x33 used for? Target shooting? What sort of loads, bullet, weight, velocity, parent cartridge?

Specially designed for ground-shooting black grouse and capercaillie apparently!

...but useful for most European small game I assume.

78-grainer at 2400 fps is the published factory ballistics.

Significantly, ME is more than 100 ftlbs LESS than any .222 Remington factory-load.

Very interesting information in this thread, thanks to all for posting. I have never owned a 222 but have always known them to be tac drivers. I have Dads old Slazenger 22 Hornet. For those who do not know this is a Lthgow SMLE re-barreled and adapted to the Hornet with a Hornet specific magazine. With the right ammo this rear locker still puts 5 into the inch. dad with the open sights used to put 10 into the inch at 100yards. he used IMI 45 grain ammo and was a man who could shoot. So I never saw the need. I do now own a Rem M7 in 223 only because a pro shooter I some times help supplies the ammo.
