North Fork cup nosed solids (available from www.northforkbullets.com) From left to right:
1. North Fork 500 grain Cup Nosed Solid .474" - new
2. same, fired into buffalo - 56" penetration
3. same, fired into giraffe - 55" penetration
4. same, fired into giraffe (100 yards follow up shot) - 58" (penetration increased when expansion was less due to reduced velocity at range?)
velocity - 2300 fps from 470 capstick

I emailed those pictures to a mate who is making his 5th trip next year and is looking to include giraffe.
He has been discussing bullets/giraffe and his 300 Ultra.
Looks like 200 grain Barnes X would expand OK

I hate to sound ignorant but where in the US can someone get them? Looks like they might be great in my .375.

wyojoe,
The website is www.northforkbullets.com
However, cup nose bullets are not on the website yet. But you can call up via telephone and order them.
Mike,
Your mate should consider a .375 for giraffe. They are bigger than a cape buffalo, and every bit as rugged, strong and tenacious. Personally I do not think that a .308 Barnes X at any velocity is sufficient. If he insists on a .308 bullet, then a solid is the way to go. Even a .458 Lott with softs has been known to fail to penetrate through the shoulder blade.
All that being said, if he slips a bullet between the ribs and does not flub his shot, the giraffe will die just like a buffalo. The other option is to snipe a giraffe's head at long range.

Dan,
That was exactly his comments after seeing the pictures.
Although it is only two shots those photos indicate the giraffe offered more resistance to the bullet than the buffalo.
Looking at the bullet for the 100 yard shot where velocity had dropped off, it would indicate at 470 Nitro speed those bullets virtually become a wadcutter.

When you go to the Northfork's site, you'll see that he's included solids and cup-points in 375 also. I like the one-stop shopping where I can three types of bullets for each caliber for my perceived needs. BTW, I'm just so glad that Mike@Northforks has come up with this as I can't get any big cal Barnes bullets to shoot worth a shit in any of my guns.

Not to mention the fact that Mike is just plain good people to deal with. I'm really pleased that he has decided to go into the solids business 'cause when I talked to him about .404's back a year or so ago, he wasn't going to do it. Too much competition for too little business was the line then. Glad he's changed his mind.
SO Y'ALL KEEP BUYING FROM NORTHFORK SO HE'LL KEEP MAKING SOLIDS, Y'HEAR!!
