The powder was 4895. I have been trying to work up a load with WW ball powder...

Why would one not use IMR4895?

Until recently I could not find any IMR4895 locally and WW748 looked like a good match.

I know this is an old tread, but I am needing to find another powder for the 9.5 x 56 my 1910, I ran outof 4895 and so far not been able to locate any. I do have a pound of Hodgdon Varget extreme. Has anyone used this powder I am not familar with it. It would be for the 270 grain bullet

Varget is just barely slower burning than H4895, both being made in Australia by ADI and have "their" numbers as well.

ADI / Hodgdon Propellants
Trail Boss / Trail Boss
AR2207 / H4198
AR2219 / H322
BM2 / Benchmark
Bench Mark 8208 / 8208 XBR
AR2206H / H4895
AR2208 / Varget
AR2209 / H4350
AR2213H, AR2213SC / H4831 / H4831SC
AR2217 / H1000
AR2225 / Retumbo

Any load for that case using IMR4895 will be safe for Varget. The Varget load will be slightly slower burning, giving slighlty lower velocties. The crossover/equivalence will be 1 or 2 gr. of powder, easily.

Appears you 9.5x57 MS shooters only want 2,000fps with 270's.

My 9.3x57 produced 2,268fps using 48.0gr. H4895 Extreme.
That load, in your larger bore and greater capacity case, if loaded using Varget, I would expect only 2,075fps to 2,100fps at most.

My 9.3x57, using 45gr. H4895 produced 2,170fps with re-sized 300gr. Hornady's.

Pressure with these loads showed ZERO web expansion (ie: .0002 & .0003") from a full length sized case. Less than 1/2 of 1 thousandths of an inch, where several thou. would be normal with even only 50,000psi loads.

Daryl
That is good news, I do appreciate the information. I think I may try to work up a load for the 6.5 x 53R and see how that goes as well
thanks

This is an interesting question. I am looking at a burn rate chart and see ~15 powders listed between H4895 and Varget. Trying to figure out where to start. We are seeing reloader 15.5 on the shelf here. Anybody tried it yet?

There are a lot of powders in the medium burn rate range.
What to do is to look at actual load data where both are used and see the difference, not at burn rate charts. Using the charts for load data is a poor idea.
Some powders produce more energy than others - THAT can get you into trouble.
If we look at Hodgdon's data for the 8x57, we see max loads:
180gr.Barnes TSX - Varget - 47.8gr. - 2,570
------------------ H4895 - 46.6gr. - 2,565
200gr. Speer SP - Varget - 47.5gr. - 2,511
------------------ H4895 - 45.4gr. - 2,524
220gr. Hornady SP- Varget - 46.8gr. - 2,390
------------------ H4895 - 45.2gr. - 2,420
I just remembered some years back in my brother's 9.3x57, he had Varget instead of H4895. IIRC, we used 46gr. with the 286gr. Norma Alaskan RN. It was
just under 2,200fps. & was accurate as he could smack 50, 100, 150 and 200meter 14"x 16" AR500 plates standing with 4 consecutive shots and he was happy
with that.
This is his moose load, in my old 9.3x57.
I keep thinking I need to purchase another one of those, but would like to try one on a 98 action just to see what it would do. I know it will match 9.3x62 data from 1930 (286gr. @ 2,340fps) as the 9.3x57 will easily beat 2,200fps in a Model 96.
BTW, www.intersurplus.com (the old tradeexcanada) has a whack of 9.3x62's on 96 Husky actions, rechambered from 9.3x57's as well as .30/06's on those same 96 Husky actions.

The estimated European CIP Pezio pressure load (PSI) for the 6.5x53R is 46 and 41 copper units of pressure called CIP Crusher.

In so far as burn rate and performance Varget is virtually the same as IMR 4064. I just crossed over from 4064 to Varget when loading for 7mm08's with same charges giving similar velocities.
4895, 4064 and 4320 are all within 1 or 2 grains of each other in the 7mm08 and would expect similar in other medium cartridges.
