Chewore South in Zambezi valley Zimbabwe
      #338874 - 09/03/20 11:43 AM

Was able to fulfil my dream about hunting big game in wild Africa with my W.J.Jeffery hammer double in .450/.400 3». The road had been a bit bumpy, even got close to selling the gun at some stage, but luckily kept it!

Hunted 1:1 10 days with PH Richard Tabor of www.richardtaborsafaris.com / www.BuchananHunts.com in The Chewore South block in Zambezi valley in Zimbabwe. True Wilderness block with no settlements at all. Just like it was in the old days of Taylor etc. except we had a cruiser to get around. Big country! Temps were a bit on the hotter side up to 40C midday beeing late october and into november. Tse-tse flies and mopani bees added to the experience... The weather changed the very last night before departure - high winds and the first bit of rain back in Harare.

It was filmed, and some of you might have seen it?

Additional game not shown in the film was a Nice Zebra and a Baboon taken with the Kimber .376H&H.

The tuskless was a frontal shot in Jesse at only 11m. Third mob of the day, 18km walking that day, and found a decent tuskless in the last mob about 4 PM. What a rush!!! Better than I ever dared dream of! I was so close I didn’t dear to cock both hammers at first due to the risk of it hearing me, or wind me, and forgot about it when I was to fire the second insurance shot, hence the second jerk on the trigger in the film.... Woodleigh Hydros we’re shockingly efficient! found bullet all the way back in neck.

The Buffalo was shot at 35m, with shoulder first, then neck which anchored him. Both hammers cocked this time,,, Woodleigh softs. The one through the shoulderjoint retained 95% weight, the one through the neck desintegrated totally...

Had FMJ for the 375 also, but luckily didn’t have to use that gun for the big stuff. Used FMJ on the Klipspringer, otherwise Woodleigh 300grs softs.

Was lucky on the Zebra. Shot at about 60-70m. Struck a twig after 30-40m. Still a good hit only 20cm up from point of aim... big entry hole! We searced for half an hour before finding it. Hit high in the lungs towards the diapraghm.

I passed up on a Nice Kudu, as I thought I would do better later. The next day it sort of dawned on me I wouldn’t, and that it was rather dumb not to shoot... Not Everyone shoots something closer to 60» and NOT in the Wilderness blocks!

Also tried for a hyena, but a male Lion took a liking on our bait.... apparently he found the elephant quite tasty? I found it coarse and gamey, however it was fresh and hadn’t hung. Leaving that for the Lion...

All in all a Splendid hunt with a good and sound PH!
