.450 Nitro Exp. 3 1/4 - Sight Question
      #33865 - 26/06/05 12:02 PM

After numerous delays, have finally got the Ruger #1 barrel threaded, chambered and crowned.
Now all that I have to do is hand finish the flats, make a forend with ebony tip, rust blue the barrel and come up with sights.
Question: For a .450 NE, what do you really need in the way of open sights? I can live with one fixed, shallow V cut in for 100 yds. but am thinking I should probably have another leaf for 150? or 200?
Any advise would be appreciated. Dave

Depending on your loads, 150 yds would probably be enough. Besides, the 500 gr bullet drops quite a bit past 150 yds anyways. If you just wanted the "look" of the folded sights, then go ahead.

Here's a wonderful sight - sold by Brownells and in this case, on my 14 gauge muzzleloading rifle.
: There is also a base for it, that fits round barrels of various sizes. They also have one with only 2 leaves. The leaves are very tall when new, so filing-in is no problem for a modern rifle. I grooved the faces of the sight and put in low temp silver solder vertical lines for low-light indicators for centre. The shallow "V" with a bead front sight is the fastest, most accurate iron sight I've ever used. The rifle pictured shoots 1 1/2" for 5 shots at 100meters off the bench virtually every time. This level of accuracy is difficult to do with "U" or narrow "V" notches - easy with shallow "Express' sights. They are not close range sights only, as some gun writers describe them - but incredibly accurate sights for any rifle. My iron sighted modern rifles also have this shape of rear sight.

Dave:
I reckon a single V express sight will do the trick for the .450 NE. Check out the trajectory on the ballistics software: zeroed at 115 yds, the bullet will not deviate more than one inch from the line of sight, all the way to 135 yds! Drop at 150 yds is still less than 2 inches! All you need, mate. Just point and shoot!

Not only that, but even 170yds. is a point-blank shot on most game, perhaps wart-hogs excluded, but an easy shot on them none the less.
