poor mans paradox gun
      #337752 - 10/02/20 12:25 PM

I have a uestion here concerning building a poor mans pardox gun
I got the idea in a book I seen years ago on shooting the british double rifle ,from what I saw these were shotguns that were rifled only in the last few inches of the barrel ,so my donor gun for this is a savage fox in 12gau. would it be feasible to shorten the barrels to balance on the hinge pin ,install rifled tubes and of course rifle sights to do somewhat the same thing?
I do know too that to use rifle sights the comb would have to be raised ,I got this from a discussion I believe with member bird hunter when we discussed making a double rifle out of it ,so anyone here have ideas to bat around? as I already have this cost would be low ,converting this to a double rifle would not be dollar feasible I am a machinist by trade so I know for whatI would have in it there are many fine used ones designed as such I could buy

thanks smitty

No need. I will shift it. I was referring you to a good place to search and have a read.

I am sure there have been threads on modifying a shotgun as you suggest to r-create a paradox or explora style rifled shotgun.

I think there was also a thread on an Italian modern maker doing it?

I think, once the barrels are cut, try out some slugs and roundballs.
May surprise you and if accuracy is acceptable no less fun than a rifled gun.

Nice piece of kit you found there Buckstix!
Obviously not a true 'paradox', but certainly capable for sure!

Smitty,
I've done it twice, both times with old Stevens 311s. The first I did about 25 years ago, cut the barrels to 21", added a Williams short ramp front and one of their adjustable rear sights and was able to get 4-5 inch groups at 40 yards using cheap Remington green box slugs. The current one I've cut to 22" and gave it the same sights. I had a welder tig a wedge between the barrels at the cut just to keep them solid. I'm handloading my slugs using a Lee 1 Oz mould, Double A hulls and Bluedot powder. The load development is not complete but it looks like I can match the earlier results at about 1300 fps. Both got whatever recoil pads were handy and both need/needed trigger work, triggers are heavy and rough, OK for a cheap shot gun but not for trying to shoot groups. I've not tried buckshot in the current but I'd expect typical cylinder bore results. Both turned out to be stout, good looking guns.

I also did this to a SxS with good results at 24" with round balls and black powder as well as smokeless.
I did not install rifled tubes but that is definitely doable.
My gun held them inside 10" at 100 meters.
