2,260fps is good speed for that 86, which looks like a re-barreled 71.

9.3x64 - with Woodleigh 525gr bullets the .50-110 can hit 2100-2200fps (in a modern gun). I’d feel confident taking on an elephant with that load..

Gosh I want one lol.

You definitely could take an ele with that 86 50-110.

My 1886 45-90 has taken multiple cape buffalo with the Kodiak 450 grain FMJ at 2150 fps.
It also took an ele with NF and Punch bullets at 2000+; on frontal brain shots, they shot through
the bone, brain back of the head and into the body of the ele. All those loads shot through two cape buff on broad side shots.



With proper bullets and loading, the 1886 can take any critter that walks or crawls.

And loaded down with 300 grain soft points, they are good deer rifles.

That's great info and a fine looking rifle.. congrats..

Have always been told and read 2150fps is the magic number for large bore rifles..this only reinforces that information..

AND its unique.. would love to see the look on my PH's face when I showed up in Tanzania with a lever action..

Would be nice if Winchester brought back the '86 in .50-110!

Gents thanks for the nice words on my 86. It is plain but functional.

The curved metal butt plate has never pinched or punished me. With the lower tip tucked into my armpit, even the African DG loads just make the heavy barrel rise and come back down on target; by then another round has been levered into the chamber.

Yes, having the 50-110 available would make another option for large and dangerous game.

Ripp speculated upon the reaction of a typical African PH to seeing their first big bore lever gun.
He is correct, but some outfitters have learned that Texans like their levers and will pay good money to come to Africa and shoot game.

Even the landowners like to check out the levers that will be used to shoot Cape Buffalo. When one saw my Winchester 1895 .405 before the hunt, he was quite curious, so I opened the action and let him handle the empty rifle. Next,he got to check the 400 grain Woodleigh ammo and agreed that it would do the job. It did:
