Product warnings in the good old days

just bought a beautiful old humpbacked Browning 12 bore in it's original case with two barrels and all accessories and the original manual. An extract from the manual reads:

5. DO NOT PUT A 20 GAUGE SHELL IN YOUR 12 GAUGE GUN if you value your gun and yourself.

I do wish the good old days didn't end.

One of the most dangerous things in shooting is putting a 20 Gauge Shell in a 12 Gauge shotgun.

I would even extend this to going shooting with someone while I was carrying a 12 Gauge
and they were carrying a 20 Gauge - the consequences of a cartridge mix up are horrendous.

I have seen a 12 Gauge action and barrel that blew up from this - the owner had been hunting rabbits
with his 20 Gauge. all well and good. The following weekend, he went out with his 12 Guage BUT in the
pocket of his shooting jacket was 1 left over 20 Gauge cartridge that he didn't know about.

Of course it accidently ended up in his 12 Gauge, didn't go off, opened the gun, the chamber was empty
so he put in a 12 Gauge shell - and that was the end of that gun + nearly his head !!!

Mehul,congratulations,you own my all time favourite shot gun.
The A5 Auto by Browning.
Sir Newton Thomas taught me to shoot clays with one of these guns.
Brings back a lot of great memories..
I used to load clays in the old mechanical traps at Nargoondi Park Gun Club.

I know that it is extremely dangerous to put the wrong caliber into ANY gun. What I found funny was the casual way in which this warning was issued in 1959. Today's guns made in the USA come stamped with so many warnings that someone who doesn't know English might think that they were some kind of newfangled engraving.

Alan,

Thanks for the good words. The gentleman who sold it to me has some more beautiful guns for sale but buying them might find me divorced.

In any case, I have told him to let me know if he doesn't find someone else to buy them so that I may pick them up. Now when am I going to win a lottery or write a bestseller?

I agree ,nowadays all warnings are so clinical and politicaly correct. Back then ,the warnings were sometimes well thought out and good to read

a late reply to an older thread... I to have seen 20 vs 12 mix-up. in Sept '04 while shooting doves my cousin's son put a 20 in a 12. thankfully it did not fire and was found before a 12 ga. shell was chambered behind it! they were both shooting 1100's. I have a mid 50's a-5 and enjoy it although my wingshooting skills are not the most impressive. fortunatly doves are very plentful in my area(i hr west of San antonio Tx) Kurt.
