A worker with PT Riau Indo Agropalma (RIA), Wahyu Kurniadi, is reported to have died following a tiger attack last Thursday in the firm's plantation area in Tanjung Simpang village of Pelangiran district, Indragiri Hilir regency, Riau.

The 19-year-old victim was suddenly pounced on from behind while he and four coworkers were working on acacias. The tiger mauled Wahyu's neck and then dragged him into bushes.

His coworkers succeeded in driving the animal off leaving its badly injured victim behind. Wahyu, however, succumbed to his wounds.

"The victim will be buried in his hometown in Aceh, as requested by his family," said Riau Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA) head Suharyono, on Friday.

He added that the BKSDA had assigned a special team to the village to educate residents and workers on what to do when they encounter wild cats.

Another worker with PT RIA, identified as M. Amri, died in similar circumstances also in Tanjung Simpang village last May. Suharyono said the area where these conflicts between humans and tigers happened was among the last remaining tiger habitats in Riau, a province in Sumatra Island.

He claimed that the BKSDA was currently looking for a solution in favor of the critically endangered mammal. "It's not wise of us to remove the tigers from their own home. Therefore, we will make the best possible solution for the problem," he added.

The Sumatran tiger population is under threat as a result of deforestation and rampant poaching. The species has been listed as critically endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List since 2008, with an estimated number of fewer than 400 surviving in the wild. Rubber tapper Abusali Hasibuan is believed to have been mauled by a tiger in a plantation area in Ulu Barumun district of Padang Lawas regency, North Sumatra.

His body was in a deplorable condition when locals and police personnel discovered it on Thursday night. The 61-year-old had apparently lost his right arm, while his head was found 50 meters away from the body.

The remains have been sent to the nearby Sibuhuan Hospital for an autopsy.

His brother Sapran Hasibuan said Abusali would usually come home before sunset, but on Thursday he had not returned until it was dark.

His family then set out to look for him, together with other residents.

“After hours of searching, we finally found his head near a hut,” Sapran said. “About 50 meters from where the head was found, we discovered the body, missing the right arm.”

Sapran said he assumed his brother had been attacked by a tiger that had been haunting the community of Siraisan village in Ulu Barumun in the past month.

Siraisan village head Sangkot Hasibuan revealed that livestock in the hamlet was likely to have been killed by the tiger.

Ulu Barumun Police chief Adj. Comr. Sudirman said police were working to locate the tiger. “Hopefully, there will be no more victims,” he said. (vny)

A resident of Pungkat Village in the Gaung District of Riau Province defied the odds by surviving a Sumatran tiger attack on Saturday, although he still suffered serious injuries.

According to the local police, Mardian, 31, was out in the afternoon with two of his friends, Bujang and Nahar, collecting wood near the village. Out of nowhere, with Bujang and Nahar’s backs to him, Mardian screamed for help as a large tiger leapt out from the woods and attacked Mardian, pinning him down with its teeth and claws.

Bujang tried to help Mardian by throwing sticks at the beast, while Nahar went to get help.

“Not long after Nahar came back with Edi. At the time Mardian was still pinned down by the tiger and had bite wounds on the right side of his back and on his head,” Gaung Police Chief Walsum told the media, as quoted by Tribun.

According to Edi, Mardian pretended to be dead while he was still at the mercy of the tiger. The tiger then dropped Mardian on the ground and stood by him, as if protecting its prey from Edi, Nahar and Bujang, who at this point were wielding machetes while trying to shoo away the tiger.

“[Mardian] was lying down, the tiger was next to him. We shooed it, but it didn’t step back very far while it bared its teeth,” Edi said.

Eventually, the tiger backed up enough and Edi and Bujang picked up Mardian and carried him to safety. During the rescue, the tiger managed to slash Bujang in his chest with its claw, but it was not a fatal wound.

Mardian was taken to a local hospital and is reportedly showing signs that he’ll make a full recovery from the deep bite wounds, one of which almost tore off his left ear.

Wildlife conservation authorities in the province have set out to find the tiger to capture it to prevent more potential harm to humans. Local police have urged residents of Pungkat Village to remain calm and not to collect wood near the spot where Mardian was attacked while also reminding them not to attack the tiger in retaliation as Sumatran tigers are an endangered species that’s protected by law.

Human-animal conflicts are common across the vast Indonesian archipelago, especially in areas where the clearing of rainforest to make way for palm oil plantations is destroying animals’ habitats and bringing them into closer contact with people.

The Sumatran tiger was responsible for at least two fatal attacks on humans on the island last year, both of whom were killed in Riau Province. Also last year, locals from Hatupangan village in North Sumatra disemboweled a Sumatran tiger and then hung the big cat from a ceiling after it attacked a pair of villagers.

Sumatran tigers are considered critically endangered by protection group the International Union for Conservation of Nature, with 400 to 500 remaining in the wild.

That's a great pity on the Tiger population in Indonesia, when I hunted Sumatra in 82 there were hundreds of Tigers & massive Clouded Leopard (never got one, no firearm & stupid kid I was) Tigers could be seen crossing the roads regularly & there were still Javan Tigers surviving in reasonable numbers in Ujung Kulon National Park, terrible to think they are gone forever now !

A long time back there was a even smaller more colorful & striped Tiger in Bali, so I'm told !

"Sumatran tiger kills farmer in Indonesia

PALEMBANG, Indonesia: A Sumatran tiger has killed an Indonesian farmer, police said Friday (Dec 6), marking the second fatal attack by the critically endangered species in less than a month.

The latest mauling near Pagaralam city in Sumatra prompted authorities to warn residents against going into local forests.

The coffee farmer's body was found Thursday by relatives who grew worried when he failed to return home, according to authorities.

"At first the victim's family thought that he had spent several nights in a hut on the plantation," local police chief Dolly Gumara told AFP.

The search party found the victim with a tiger prowling nearby, he said.

Last month, a Sumatran tiger mauled to death a coffee farmer and seriously injured an Indonesian tourist in the same part of Sumatra.

The 57-year-old wrestled with the big cat before it killed him, according to the local conservation agency.

South Sumatra has seen five tiger attacks this year, including two fatal incidents.

Human-animal conflicts are common in the vast Southeast Asian archipelago, especially in areas where the clearing of rainforest to make way for palm oil plantations is destroying animals' habitats and bringing them into closer contact with people.

In March last year, a man was killed by a tiger in Sumatra's Riau province while several months earlier a tiger also killed a plantation worker in the area.

Sumatran tigers are considered critically endangered by protection group the International Union for Conservation of Nature, with fewer than 400 believed to remain in the wild.

Not surprised. Part of the inevitable animal human conflict, where wild beasts are squeezed in ever smaller refuges and the ever breeding local humans push more and more into these areas.

Indonesia as a land mass of islands is tiny but has a population of over 300 million people. And the locals near tiger forests ever encroach into these forests to poach, cut grass, cut thatch, graze livestock, farm illegal food plots, cut wood, etc etc. Contact with or near dangerous beasts must be common. Poaching of wild game, means less game for a beast such a predator as a tiger to hunt and eat. A kill such as this might be merely because the tiger was disturbed and not a maneater. Or a maneater for all sorts of reasons, such as age, injury or lack of other edible species.

Its time for these bloody over-populated countries to STOP BREEDING MORE HUMANS! Africa, Asia, Central and South America have often exponential population increases. And land for wildlife is of less and less importance. We do not need massively increasing populations and excessively large families with modern medicines.

Indonesia's huge population and in particular Javans and some others, already mean they encroach on other islands populations. Pushing out and down the local inhabitants. In West Papua, Sulawesi and elsewhere. Soon in Borneo where the new capital will be. One day, and already they are looking at "un-populated" Northern Australia.

Yet the West continues to poor in billions of dollars of aid money into these countries which only exacerbates the future problems. If they would only act on population self control, they would be far more viable sustainable economies

Wildlife always looses when humans like locusts infest the entire landscape and the wilderness is eradicated.

BTW what is an "industrial forest"?
