Chapuis o/u
      #33344 - 18/06/05 10:44 PM

This morning I had the opportunity to test-fire a Chapuis o/u. It was the Super Orion grade in 9,3x74R and I fired the Norma 232 Vulkan for which the rifle was factory regulated. It sported very nicely figured wood and engraved false sideplates. Engraving was shallow and kind of shoddy. Compared to my FN-Browning o/u, the overall picture was rather cheap (true, the Chapuis costs half the price) and it shot accordingly, with individual bbls. grouping tight but 6 cm (2.4") apart at 50 m. All in all, definitely not my cup of tea.

5 shots are a group.

I've seen scopes stack the individual barrels groups before (it used to do it on my Chapuis before I had it re-regulated with the scope). So it might be that.

Andre,
I have not had the chance to examine any of the Chapuis O/U rifles and was just wondering what you thought of the quality of build.
Are they well put together regarding metal fitting and how did the gun handle compared to your FN?

The rifle came with a factory test target very much the same as mine. I read somewhere that their factory stds. called for both bbls. grouping within 7 cm at 50 m*, so this one should qualify (BTW, not to my stds...). I tried open sights vs. scope and it didn't make much difference. This in itself is rather unusual for, as Chasseur noted, scoping a double often requires adjusting the bbls. (after being scoped, my FN crossfired and had to be re-regulated). Comparing the Chapuis to my FN is like comparing a Toyota to a Mercedes.

*I don't know if they still do but formerly Chapuis used to laser sight the bores in order to adjust the bbl. wedge, instead of the tedious and empirical (un-)solder/shoot method. It certainly brings down cost...

I'm a little confused. If you saw the test target, were aware of what the qualifications were for regulation - and neither were to your standards... why did you buy the gun?

It's by no means my gun, just a rifle I was asked to test-fire. BTW, I'm already "married" to a handmade FN-Browning CCS25.
