Early Mauser Oberndorf Commercial

Hi. New to the forum and thought some of you might be interested in seeing this. I picked this up not really knowing what it was for 235 bucks shipped. I collect MO late war K98k's and have a few other military MO rifles so when I saw the MO stamped receiver and the price, I couldn't pass it up. I have discussed it on a couple other forums and got some info from Jon Speed but if anyone has any info on it, I would appreciate it. All numbers match, down to the screws. I have additional pics if you'd like to see a particular aspect of the gun.

I'm also interested in hearing opinions on collector value and if it would be ok to have the rear receiver bridge repaired, or just leave it alone. I doubt I would get it fixed but the thought has crossed my mind.

Any help finding a rear sight would be greatly appreciated!

Hi jbmauser,

Seems to be an early Model C Armee Sporting rifle. But I am not 100% sure about this because that "Gew 98" un the left side of the action...

Best!

PH

Thatīs definitely a Type C " Army " Hunting Rifle. In spite of the name for civilian purpose only.
The proof marks B and U on barrel shank , left side of the receiver and bolt handle root were strictly used for civil arms.
The Gew. 98 marking on the receiver not too surprising on that very early specimen. The lack of the firing pin safety shoulder you will only find on pre 1901 production time.

The milled flat on the receiver and boltstop certainly a later ad for use of a diopter sight , I guess.
There were models for the Wehrmann Gewehr to mount on top of the boltstop housing.

Thanks for the info guys. It is my understanding that the "C" model designation didn't start until 1903 but I agree this definitely has all the features of the later "C" models.

Very nice rifle, not such common in this condition, really deserving a thorough restoration.
