"The Express Rifle" by Saul Braceras

I saw this book advertised in DGJ, liked the look of it, and told my wife, "That's what I'd like for my birthday". Sweetheart that she is, it arrived today. All I can say is that the photos alone are worth the price! It looks like it will be an interesting read, translation gremlins and all.

When was it published? Is it a historical type of book, picture book? Whatever it is, it certainly has the right title! Maybe you can judge a book by it's cover!

The book is a new publication and, to the best of my knowledge is only available through the DGJ.

I was wondering, has anyone in the meantime acquired a copy of this book and what do you think of it?

I owned a copy for a short while and then sold it.

Not bad, not great. If you want lots of full color pictures, its a pretty good book (unfortunately with lots of pictures of bad engraving...). He had some "gun review" sections that do not give you more information than you get from ads from the various makers. An interesting thing is that the focus is on Continental double rifles (Krieghoff, Chapuis, etc) rather than English one, so you get some interesting pictures and observations on them rather than the whole book being on English rifles.

He duplicates a great deal of loading info G. Wright had in his book and cartridge information that again you can get from COTW or Wright or other sources.

On the whole is ok, but I would not spend the kind of money DJG is asking for it. Just my opinion.

Double rifles from a Spanish perspective. The emphasis is
on Continental makers. A lot of names come up as DR makers
that I had no clue ever built one. For that, it was worth
reading. Everyone here already knows the reloading part.
Nice photos and lots of them. More like a coffee table
book than a serious study of doubles.

I agree, its an okay book but not required reading. If you want an info book there are much better out there. If you want a coffee table/picture book there are much, much better out there. I was rather disappointed.

I liked the pictures and the info was I suppose useful; BUT thats an awful lot to ask for a book that is only half readable. They suckered me into buying it becasue I kept seeing the ad. OK, thats my fault; but where in the add does it mention that half of the book is Spanish! They give details about the size and contents; but I guess it just slipped there minds that its a tranlation, and a bad one at that.

I bought it thinking this might be a compliment to Boddington's Safari Rifles, and provide good info! Face it, for us 'working types' thats alot less ammo I can afford. I liked it enough not to hassle with sending it back; but it's a $50 book not $130.oo. Mark Sullivan's Death and Double Rifles was more informative and only $70!

DGJ could atleast be honest about what they are selling.

I think I will give it a miss from the reports.

A member of NE.com even very generously offered me his copy on loan for free.

I think I will keep looking AND open an new thread for ideas.
