I'm not using an over powder card below the lube. Should I be? If so, do you buy these or use a tool to make them?

Chris,
In cold weather I don't think there is a huge problem with lube contaminating the powder if no over powder wad is used.

I do use over powder wads, either a thin "milk carton" wad punched out, or better I think is a thin over powder punched out of "Bee Brood Foundation" ……just 100% beeswax. The bee brood shields the powder from the more greasy/oily lube, yet melts on firing to allow mixing of the lube and hot powder gasses.

I use an arch punch reamed/drilled out to the needed diameter for making over powder wads. It is also possible to find arch punches in the necessary diameter in Metric (do the metric to decimal conversion). It so happens that a 13mm punch is perfect for .50 cal wads.

So many variables to try/test in search of a load that the rifle likes.

Thanks Mike. I’ve used bees brood and have some. Will keep that in mind.

Re punches, I was happy to see that Amazon has plenty of options there. Will give that a go.

Happy New Year to you and yours.

Chris

I have used wax paper disks between the lube "ball" and the powder with excellent results.
I know in s later book that "The Paper Jacket" Paul Mathews wrote about the bee brood foundation working better, but since I have a dedicated "roll" of wax paper, I continue to use that. 1 under the lube and one over, at the base of the bullet.

I bought a set of hollow punch drills from Harbor Freight

https://www.harborfreight.com/6-piece-hollow-punch-set-67030.html

In a drill press you can cut a few layers of card stock at a time.

I cut fully 1/2" or more of waxpaper sheets (compressed roll) per pass using a .45/70 case with a sharpened mouth. I drilled a 1/4" hole through the primer pocket, then inserted a 2 1/2" x 1/4"x 20 TPI threaded bolt into the hole, then screwed on a nut, locking the bolt to the brass case.
Chucked in the drill press and running it against a piece of plastic cutting board HDPE) or UHMW, I cut hundreds of wads, ie" wax paper disks in just a few minutes.
Unscrewing the nut, allowed me to push out the cut disks of wax paper. Worked a charm and cost me 1 ctg. case, a nut and a bolt.
I've done this for both .45 and .50 cal. BP Ctgs. for using with lube balls beneath the loaded bullet.
1 between the powder and lube wad, 1 between the wax-paper disk and bullet's base, it no card wad. If a card wad is also used, the 2nd wax paper disk is not used.
Paul Mathews thought the bee brood foundation was an improvement over the wax paper. I do not know as all I every have used, is wax paper. My .50 Alaskan, loaded with 85gr. 2F and a 550gr. lubed RCBS bullet, 50/50 pure lead and WW, printed 1 1/2" groups for me, at 200yards - double apertures(just like my .30BR match rifle).
