Winchester survey on calibres for new 1885
      #32762 - 08/06/05 09:22 AM

I noticed Winchester is asking for feedback on what calibres people would like for the new run of 1885 models www.winchester-guns.com you can nominate what you want. A .375H&H Flanged would be nice! some of my choices

.300H&H
.303British
.375H&H
.405Win.
.470NE

but we will only get the new WSM calibres most likely.

I went to the site and put in my vote for the .375 H&H. Unfortunately it looks like less than two percent have voted for the .375. The .577 Tyrranosaur made the top five though so there may be some really unusual people voting...

A .375H&H would be a good calibre, a 577 tyronosaur a bit different! A .450/400 3 1/4 would be better

I voted for:

.405;
.50/110;

and will vote for .303 British as well.

How do you vote more than once? I had to wait a long time for the cookie to expire before the second vote.

A .375 and .300 Flanged would also be cool. I also thought about the .450/400's.

As for the .577 T-rex it just shows how many dickheads vote in these things and how unreliable some of the results are. The boring .30-06. .30-30 and .45/70 lead the list of course.

I vote every time I log on ,yes the .303Brit would be great and I noticed Davidsons in the US have a special run of .405Win 1885's but bloody Winchester here in Australia will not import them or the Winchester 1895 in 405Win. They are only good for Lanber Shotguns and stock standard model 70's.

I looked for a .450/.400 option in their dropdown listing, did not see one. If able to vote more than once I'm going back to see if they have a .35 Whelen listed.

Something of note for anyone interested in the British calibres, a company in the USA, I believe the name of the company is Ballard Rifle & Cartridge, makes a custom High Wall in an "Express Rifle" version and calibres offered include .375 Flanged and .450/.400. The price is a bit high though.

RLI,

I'm in the USA now and .405 cal. 1895's apparently aren't easy to find here. I believe some people have them now but I started looking a couple of years ago when Winchester started advertising them and gave up long before they delivered anything.

If you can get one from the USA it might be best to route it through a gunsmith in Arlington, Texas, Dave Clay of DRC Custom Guns, he'll remove the tang safety, and weld up the opening in the tang, making it into more of an original 1895.

Richard.

500Nitro,

The price is only high if compared to an out of the box Winchester. For a custom made rifle it is quite reasonable. I keep forgetting that people on this forum do not respond to a gun's price tag with "YOU PAID HOW MUCH?"

As far as I know, most of Ballard's rifles are made to order, but like most gunmakers they usually have a few of their guns in stock for immediate delivery. The company is located in Wyoming and produces reproductions of the old Ballard single shots as well as High Walls and Rolling Blocks. I believe they produce the High Walls in any chambering that is safe to use.

I think Ballard had the High Walls ranging in cost from $3,000 to $4000 US a few years ago, depending on options chosen. I've seen one of their Ballard single shot reproductions in person and it was easily worth the price, but I have not seen any of their High Walls in person. The High Wall actions they use are apparently not sourced from Winchester.

Ballard has a website at http://www.ballardrifles.com/ which has more information than I know about them. If you're interested in any of the guns they produce let me know and I'll call the company and bombard them with any questions you have.

Richard.

500 Nitro,

Ballard's site finally loaded for me and I pinched these two photos from their list of rifles available for delivery:

Richard,

Thanks - they look quite nice and seem to be well made.

The wood / buffalo horn seems to be well done.

500Nitro,

Richard,
I do have Winchester 1895 in .405Win. and hopefully very soon a original in .405Win., I had to import the 1895 from US myself as useless Winchester Australia will not import them. I would prefer without the tang safety but it does not bother me that much.

The Winchester site now has the .375 H&H up to 1.99% of the votes in the new calibre survey for the 1885's. That percentage includes my three votes for the .375.

The .577 T-Rex is still in the top 5 with 3.76%. Given the lack of a huntable dinosaur population, this makes me wonder who or what is voting. Having seen some full sized metal dinosaurs in Glenrose, Texas, a town with a river bed full of ancient dinosaur tracks, I think I'd want something bigger for hunting those things.

Richard.

Steve,

If you import any more .405 Win. 1895's into Australia from the USA, shop carefully, because people interested in buying one here are saying that there is now an unusually wide price range among the distributors who have them, with some distributors charging almost twice as much as others for the same rifle.

Richard.

The Davidson limited edition High Walls all come with crescent buttstocks which is dumb, especially in the .405.

As to the High Walls by Ballard, I have seen these at the Denver gun show and the quality is very high. But the tiny forends on the express calibres are a mistake, nothing to hold on to.
