Recoil Pads
      #32757 - 08/06/05 05:28 AM

I have a Chapuis 470 with a Pachmayr recoil pad that stinks! I catches on my shirt every time I raise and lower the rifle. How about some advice from you DR old-timers on what I should do.

My .375 H&H DR has no recoil pad and I like it that way.

I agree with you, cause I don't care for rubber pads either. Just like you I find they catch up on clothes. I usually do one of 2 things. Either get a leather cover one (expensive) or get one made from wood, exotic type to look right, and checker the backside.

Try the Old English Pads by Silvers.

They don't catch and tend to smooth / shine up
over a period of time.

Try a Pachmayr SC100 Sporting clays. It's basically a Decelerator with a hard rubber insert at the heel so it won't drag on your clothes when you mount it. Looks very good and works almost as well as a regular Decelerator. Only a couple of bucks more.

Brownells has a 2 part coating for pads that cures the problem, makes them slick...

Another solution is to leather cover them, that is my choice...

A silvers pad is a good way to go, but you still need to put finish on it...

It could be that your rifle does not
fit you. I use the kick ease they are
soft and do not hang on clothes on a
properly fit gun. Usually if a gun
hangs in the same place time after
time it is the fit.

I agree, the pull may be a tad long. My .375 is about 1/2 inches shorter and I don't have this problem.

In reply to:

I just checked out Brownells and here is the name of the produce Ray is talking about:

KICK-EEZ SLICK-EEZ

Mfr: KICK-EEZ

One application makes your rubber recoil pad "super-slick" for faster gun mounting; completely eliminates clothing "hang-up". Goes on easily; dries to a friction-free, clear film that won't peel or crack. Can be used on any rubber recoil pad (except Terminator brand).

SPECS: Kit includes Cleaner, 2 fl. oz. (59mL), Pad Treatment, 1 fl. oz. (29mL) and instructions.

Catalog page 64

$23.95

I may get some for myself.

I don't care how slick it is if it
does not fit you will still have
problems. Think about a plastic
butt plate and how it just slides
so much you can not get consistent
mounts.
