30 cal 250gn barnes bullets. Any good?
      #32647 - 04/06/05 09:26 PM

I have aquired a box of 250 gn Barnes bullets and have tried them in my 300 weatherby. I notice that they are not made any more. Are these bullets any good for bigger animals or would the newer 200 gn bonded or Barnes X bullets be better? Has anyone used them on bigger gane?

I questioned about if the 250gr bullet is made for the 30/06 a while ago.

Well I found an answer for my own question a few days ago. I loaded some up in my 300 weatherby for a pig hunt. I got one pig in the head as it was coming towards me. I found the jacket in the arm pit area and it looked like the core came apart in a few pieces. It only travelled 30 cm (12"). I got another pig behind the shoulder as it was running away and it didnt exit either. It looks like the 250gn bullets dont penetrate all that well ,so Im not going to use them for scrub bulls like I was intending to.

The 250 gr. Barnes bullets were made a long time ago and, I believe, were specifically for the velocities you can get in an '06 case. Most likely your poor performance out of the Weatherby case is do to the excess speed therefrom. This was a very typical problem with Weatherby cartridges back when they were first being designed and the 250 gr Barnes dates from that period. Nothing wrong with the bullet in its proper case but in the Weatherby you get blowup. That's why if you shoot Wby, you need premium bullets.

cr500,

You need to match the bullet you use to the

1. Gun / Cartridge Chambering
2. Game being shot
3. Impact velocity on game.

As oldsarge says,
"Nothing wrong with the bullet in its proper case"

You need a bullet that will withstand very high IMPACT velocities
for when you shoot game up close with the 300 Weatherby otherwise
you get the result you got.

When I was given the bullets ,I didnt know what velocity range they were for ,which is why I posted the message. As you said ,in a 30 06 they would probably hold together well. Oh well ,at least I got to test them on some pigs first before taking them on a scrub bull hunt. When I take the 300 wby along as a spare scrub bull rifle ,it will either be full of woodleighs or Barnes bullets.

cr500

You could back off the velocity a bit.

This is also not a bad thing to do when shooting
big game at close range - higher velocities tend
to pull up bullets faster as they expand quicker.

Heavier bullets going slower generally penetrate further
into the animal
