John Rigby 1 of 25 Takedown London Best Mauser 98 .404
      #326297 - 23/03/19 08:45 PM

The John Rigby & Co released a number of a series of photos and some commentary on recent rifles they have made.

Some excellent rifles, mauser and rising bites. Some heavily embellished, some very vintage, a mixture. I hope the gentlemen of NE enjoy these over the next few weeks.

Rigby 1 of 25

Gun 1 of 25 starts the 25 guns of Christmas series and it is a spectacular example of a takedown London Best. We regard the take-down format as the pinnacle of magazine rifle craftsmanship. This rifle has full coverage St James scroll by Will Wild and is cased with a full suite of handmade London accessories in a leather case with canvas outer. #RIGBY #FITFORPURPOSE #LONDONBEST

This rifle is in .404 Jeffery.

I love seeing a modern Rigny takedown. When I win lotto this week, maybe I could finally realise my dream of a multi barreled Mauser 98 takedown.

I like the engraving on this rifle, and it is tastefully done and well executed. However for me, a plain or mostly plain rifle is what I go for. I abuse my firearms too much to ever use such a rifle decorated like this.

I do love the rifle case below, in this case a takedown rifle case.

I would want to order an extra padded canvas cover however to protect the canvas cover on the case! Good colour scheme on the gun case. Perfectly matching my Billingham camera bag/travel bag. And close to my Boyt Harness shoulder/attache bag I sometimes use for my laptop and assorted crap. Need a matching duffel and I will be a gun toting travel fashionista! :O

Nitrox,

Yep, it is in shadow, but I can see it in the photo that you reposted. Which is good, a bolt without a guide rib just doesn't look complete to me.

Thank you.

Actually I wasn't thinking correctly when I posted, thinking about a bolt turned up ...

But nevermind, these are true Mauser 98 actions. At some time I am sure photos will be shown of the actions themselves.

I have a Boyt for the M1910 Mannlicher Schönauer that is used while the original fitted case is 'resting'.

Beautiful rifle with fantastic engraving but the case really makes it. Really love those canvas covered cases, they just scream adventure.

This rifle is obviously made to Manfred Orth's take down system. The receiver ring is bored out to take the barrel extension with the locking lug recesses. The barrel is held in place by the foreend, which slides up in the T-shaped rib and is locked in place by the "Deeley latch".

Manfred patented this take down system in 1998, German patent DE198 15 261 A1, and marked rifles of his own make accordingly.

Here is such a rifle in .416 Rigby made by Manfred himself :

In 2000 he made such a takedown rifle in 12.7 x70 Schüler aka .500 Jeffery for Paul Roberts. (This was before Daid Little's = Kynamco's new ".500 Jeffery" was CIP approved) At about the same time, he made another one in .416 Rigby for M. Lüke, the owner of Blaser, Mauser, Rigby and Sauer.
Now, with the patent expired and in the public domain, Rigby obviously used Manfred Orth's design on this rifle. I spoke with Manfred yesterday about this rifle and agreed:
"Imitation is the sincerest kind of flattery."
