Not sure what it is, but I really like those rifles. Never held one even, but like them.

Although its a bit on the noisy side because of the extra movement due to the telescoping action. But its this very short action that gives it the fast lock time that helps make it such an accurate rifle.

I have a Mannlicher Schoenauer carbine with a 20" barrel originally in .270 Winchester, which I promptly had rebored and converted to 9.3X62, a decision I have never regretted. Short barrels and low expansion ratio make for unburned propellant and uncomfortable muzzle blast.

I also have two Model 66 Mausers, both with 24" barrels.

This is my third Mauser 66 and it feels like a keeper. Others were a minty (but with unacceptably blonde wood) 30-06 Stutzen and a far too heavy 8x68 rifle. I will leave it as a .270. I shoot short barrel fullstock carbines in at least 10 different calibers, including .270 and 9.3x62. I realize some calibers are more or less efficient in the short barrel but they are all very effective 3-shot hunting rifles. I own a couple of dozen vintage Stutzens from various European manufacturers. That said, I would never rebore any of my Mannlicher-Schoenauers. Did you experience any problems with the conversion or were the .270 and 9.3x62 cases close enough in size so that it wasn't a problem smoothly feeding from the rotary magazine?

If there were any problems with the magazine, they were taken care of at the time of the conversion. The late Jim Dubell of Clearwater Reboring did the job. It feeds perfectly.

I've learned from my 6.5X54 Mannlicher Stutzen that heavy bullets minimize the noise factor.

The 9.3x62 is like or similar to what a .366 Brown Whelen would be, with just slightly longer neck, about 25 degree shoulder & .004" larger base, same shoulder dia. Same water capacity @ 78gr.

Strangely enough, I have a 20" barrel Stutzen, built on a M1917 Enfield action, in caliber .35 Brown Improved Whelen. It's a little on the heavy side, but that helps minimize the recoil.

Beautiful rifle. The one I have, and indeed, most of the ones I have seen have blonde wood.

This is the "blonde wood" rifle that I replaced.
It was minty but I just couldn't live with that light colored wood.

The dark wood & black striping on this Mauser is almost identical to the wood on my Brocock air rifle.

Cut from the same tree!

Heck the grain flows from the one gun thru the other!
