338-06 and .275 Rigby
      #325070 - 23/02/19 03:18 PM

Two new calibres. The 338-06 was a local pick up and a patient wait for the 7x57 in a highland stalker on the used market.
338-06 is a rem 700 build by D. Kerr, HS precision stock stainless fluted barrel cut to 22". Few loads and in the field with it. Very impressed with its performance with 185 GMX's from hornady. Also tried the 180 and 200 woodleighs designed for the 338-06. The 200 has worked well so far.

meaty neck shot 30m 185GMX

Recovered from finishing shot thru shoulders of cow above

7m head shot stinking hot

2m running 180gr PPSN

High Land stalker 275 Rigby
What can I say..... Absolutely beautiful. Woodwork is exceptional as is the metal work.
Purchased second hand with only a few rounds thru it. came with 30mm rings and mounts so I had to wait for a new scope .
Decided to use it with iron sights. Shoots well with 140 woodleigh PPSN's and hydros.
2-8x42 Artemis turned up and a quick session with handholds and ready for a pig hunt.
Weather has been all over the place so intermittent hunts at the local. Found a small mob early one morning and dropped three. Enjoying how nice the 7x57 is to shoot.
looking forward to a lot more hunting with it this year.
Trying to source 275 cases?
Heres a few pics cheers Mick

Hi Mick,

I would be keen to hear what you think of your Rigby Highland Stalker. Saw one on the used market myself, and wondered "what if" one day when i have the funds. So would welcome your comments.

Especially as you have a range of different firearms from different double rifles, to classic firearms, to modern plastic fantastics. A range of diversity, to use a modern PC word.

Put a lot of thought into the Highland stalker. Price was a major consideration and the cal if it did happen would be a 275/. 7x57.
Initialy this all started with a look at a few classic English rifles and a purchase of a William Evans in .318WR. My dreams of a Rigby or Westly Richards , Holland and Holland were squashed by price or availability and import export issues. Or my ignorance of process.
My lack of control on other purchases didn't help.......
Eventually everything lined up and the 275 Rigby turned up on used guns. Price was negotiated and pretty happy with what I paid for it.
Eagerly anticipated its arrival and PTA arrived a day or so after it arrived at the local shop.
A mate had seen it being packaged to send up to me and had commented on how nice it looked and the wood was stunning!
First impressions were "Wow" removing it from the sock wood was very nice with great grain, on the left hand side.
Metal fit was very good and the mech very slick for a Mauser. Safety is very positive and easy to use.
The stock had been shortened by 1/2 " and a new old English pad fitted. About perfect for me.
The open sights come to the eye and suit me well. Sighting session put 140 hydros and 140 PPSN 's To similar impact as regulated load.
Mounts , I'm still out of school on the way these work but time will tell how they hold zero.
The search for a scope or one that would suit was difficult as 30mm tube required
. Wanted something that suited the English lines of the scope and funds were low so went with the Artemis 2-8x42. Shoots MOA of the bench with my other 7x57 loads and factory Winchester ammo.
Not the best style of stock / forehand to shoot of the bags with, so happy with the group size. Hydros shoot almost same point of impact, so they will be very handy.
In the field its a little bit heavier than I Like but balance is very good so easy to carry. Sling supplied is a leather tie in job which works very well but not very practical for the tropics. So looking for another option .
Comes into line and points well making it very easy to hit with. Running shots very easy with it.
Overall I'm very impressed with it........
Only negative comments I've had back about it is that its not an original Rigby or 100 years old .
I think that Rigby have done justice in the production of a new classic stalker.
I can see it being used a fair bit this dry season.
Another one in 9.3x62 would be very nice!
cheers Mick

Yes - a 9.3x62 would be great!

As-is- well done, Mick.

The .338/06 is a hell of a round. The .338/06 IMP is right on the heals of the .338 Win Mag. factory ammo.

Mick, a couple of nice rifles there.

Great wood on the Rigby. Try Bertram and see if they have 275 stamped brass.

I have handled several of the Rigby's and like you I feel they are a bit heavy. Guess you can not please everybody

Well done Mick, nice pigs and the Rigby looks very nice, good to see that you are happy with it. 7x57 seems to be your new favorite cartridge and with good reason. Incidentally the 338-06 is Geoff McDonald owner of Woodleigh bullets favorite cartridge for deer and pigs etc. Have you tried any Woodleigh 160 grain PPSN in your 7x57's, would be interested to hear what you think.
Hornady make brass headstamped with 275 Rigby of the shelf.

I love my 338-06, it is one of my favourites. Mauser 98 action, pretty ordinary stock really wood wise but fits me well. Has a Maddco barrel and just shoots shit hot. I run 200 Woodleighs in it and they perform flawlessly. Also love my 7x57/.275 also on a Mauser. Two great calibers there Mick

Looks like you've sorted the kinks out on both mate!
Done well to pick up a Rigby - regardless of age.

Well done with the 338-06, great cartridge, better suited to more Southern States with more light game & longer range but will still handle the big boys in a push, the 9.3X62 is a little better suited (in my mind any way) to the big fellas .

I have used the 185gr TS in mine a lot as it can be pushed to crazy velocity's in my Weatherby Ultra Light, just trying out the GMX 185gr now, can't push them as fast yet & not quite so accurate in my 338/06 but worked well in my 30/06

G'Day Fella's,

Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm Donuts!
Thanks for sharing 264.

FYI, I have been using ADI AR-2208 powder, in my .338-06 rifle.
I got onto this, by looking thru some of the older Handloader magazines, and a book, Wildcat Cartridges, Vol II (both by Wolfe), and they all recommended IMR-4320 powder for this cartridge.

Hope that helps

Nice looking rifles..

I remember years ago when Weatherby came out with the 338-06 chambered in their rifles.. we bought several to auction off at the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation meetings.. and man, did they sell..and from what I heard, work very well on elk..

With today's wide range of premium and standard bullets, the .35 Whelen is better, of course, but only if handloaded.
For soem strange reason the .35 Welen is held to 60,000psi, while the SAAMI specs on the .338/06, identical in every way except for bullet diameter, is loaded to 65,000psi.
That is why you see loads with 250gr. in the 338/06 running mid 2,500fps, while the .35 Whelen is loaded to 2,450fps.

Yeah, I know, that is only 100fps. It's just the principal of the whole cluster - afair.

Well it is seldom I don't agree with you Daryl, but on this I'm afraid I don't, wider range of bullets for one 160gr to at least 300gr & all good, lots of .358 bullets will not perform well in the Whelen .

Near as good or very similar yes lol !

But on the Bigger stuff I would go with the 9.3X62, it is a giant killer but if I didn't have a 9.3 the 338/06 would do the job !

Well done on the pork and beef hunt.

I am a big fan of the 338/06, mine is an Ackley Improved version that I hunted with for over 35 years. Built it myself as one of my project rifles at Gunsmithing school.

I prefer the Sierra Game King 250 grain bullets. I started with that bullet back in 1984 because if the Woodleigh was even available the Sierra's were cheaper and would have fit a student budget better. At school it shot 1 inch groups and 3000 fps.

I have taken javelina, feral hogs, coyote, deer (lots of Deer), elk and one moose with my rifle. Moose with 338/06 AI This cartridge is one that is well over looked and should be in every gunmakers inventory or every hunters gun rack.

OK - fair - but - they are so close - I did say with all the PREMIUM bullets available. That excludes all the bullets that won't work and includes all of them that do, whether made in the USA, Australia, Germany, Austria, etc.
I also included the remark about loading to the same breech pressure, thus, the greater expansion ratio favours the .358 - for the animals one would normally go after with a .358.

Thus my .375/06IMP is even better than the 9.3x62 even though they have exactly the same case capacity. (I will admit to having 2 9.3x62's and only one .375/06IMP)
