Arizona, scroll down this page a little bit, and on the left side you'll see Pages 1, 2, 3. Click on page 1, and it will take you to the first page of this thread. The shooting sticks are shown, and described there.

Not the best photo, but here is a Long Grass set of shooting sticks being used as a game tripod.

Just got mine today. And John, mine did not come with a "critter balancer".

The concept of shooting sticks is similar to using a tripod on a military weapon. It provides a steady rest for the shot.

PS - Did Long Grass forget the critter deal on my order or is this a perk reserved for site hosts from OZ?

Melody,

Just a thought for us double rifle shooters. The sticks are great, but would it be posible to have a leather cradle between the sticks? When we shoot a double, we don't rest the barrel on the sticks - we hold the barrel. If there was a cradle that could suooprt the wrist or forarm, you would rock!

The sticks are great for one barrel. But some sort of thick leather cradle for double rifles would be great.

Get your hubby up to Camp Cooley for the August get together.

And if you get to this site since your Boddington endorsement, stick around. There are genuine hunters and sportsmen here, not paid shills.

And I'm still waiting for the NITROX counterweight.

Being a Texan, if you have one in armadillo, that would be fine.

In reply to:

They are too light (fortunately) to hang a stag or boar from though.

Grizzly

Their are other shooting sticks available that have a cradle in the middle.

Try Stoney Point for one.

Stay away from the ALLEN Single stick - it's crap and breaks.

Maybe Long Grass is on to bigger and better things since the Crazy Eddie of hunting. C. Boddington, endorsed them, He probably hung a Surefire flashlight off the thing to kill the beast with lumens.

Thanks for the information.

Grizzly

I tried sticks a few years back which didn't have a cradle
and they just didn't work for me. Then I saw ones with the
cradle and gave them a go - albeit in a shop - and they felt
much more comfortable.

Another company to try is Crooked Horn (www.crookedhorn.com).
They also all hunt so know what they are talking about.
Ask for Branda who should be able to help you.

I distribute the product here in Australia and they make top quality stuff
that works - and I am very particular about my hunting gear as I am hard
on it and once it's aid for I like it to last.

Now I haven't tried their hunting sticks but everything else they make that
I have seen / used is great.

Hope this helps

I think I may have a set of the Stoney Point sticks but was not impressed with actual use.

I had a look at the crooked horn website but the photos of the sticks is not detailed enough to show what they are. I can't see any "cradle" in the photos???

You can make shooting sticks as complicated as you like. But 99.9% of those used in Africa follow a basic formula and this seems to work pretty well. The idea is often not to actually rest the forend of a rifle in the V but your hand. Though with a bolt action I admit I do rest the forend in the V and it works OK. With a double rifle you need to interpose your hand anyway in the V.

Also my personal preference is a tripod arrangement especially with a double. A bipod arrangement always seems less stable unless used for prone shots.

Wood and leather is also nice compared to metal and plastic.

The ones I was sent use this simple formula which actually works.

Even cheaper is to make a set yourself which also is not hard.

I find the more complicated the things are, the less actually usable they are.

I'll send a note over to Long Grass. I bet they will come on line to talk. Seem to be good people from my dealings with them.
