Namibia Safari - Giraffe
      #32259 - 29/05/05 02:44 AM

This old Stinkbull Giraffe was shot from @ 165 yards, again with the 270 Grain XLC bullet. Another quartering away shot, it took out the top of the heart, and one lung. It ran about 80 yards after the shot, and piled up. I couldn't believe how big these things are! My P.H. estimated his age at around 20 years.

Mike,

that's one nice Giraffe! Aren't they a wild animal to shoot! I really like the markings on yours, congrats on the big guy!! I took one a few weeks ago in Zimbabwe with Buffalo Range Safaris.

How are you going to mount it? I'm doing mine in a shoulder pedastal mount, to sit on the floor, did two just lately for clients, they really look good that way.

When I shot my giraffe, it was 50 yards away and started running. Each of the 4 shots I put into it, the giraffe was on a dead run. However, it looked like it was in slow motion even though it was really covering ground. It dropped at about 100 or 125 yards.

Just out of curiosity, has anybody tried Giraffe for any kind of tablefare? Maybe just the backstrap?

I had some last year in Zim, a client of mine shot a bull, didn't stink like mine this year. The meat was ok, not someting I would pick as a favorite. The one I shot this year had a strong musty smell, not something I wanted to eat, it got fed to the crocs

Here's the "Stink" bull I was talking about

I have to agree, after the first shot they look like they are running in slow motion, but really they're hauling ass! I did mange to hit him with the next 3 shots, found him a ways away, stone dead! Took him with a Remmington 700 in a .416, iron sights off hand at about 80 yards.

Yeah, they're big. Right after the elephant, rhino and hippo, giraffe are the largest land mammals. Just a suggestion, whether you pedestal mount or rug him, have the skull bleached and mounted on a placque European style. The damned head on those things is near 3 feet long and will blow the mind of anyone seeing it for the first time.

Oldsarge,

Good point about the skull, I'm having it cleaned and sent over with my trophies. I also had them include the lower jaw, I plan to put it on the floor or a table.

Here's a photo of a close up of his head:

I'm having a rug made from it, trimmed in dark brown leather. The 3 feet of the neck closest to the head will be made into a couple of pillows.

One thing that amazed me about the Giraffe was how hard the frontal shoulder bones are. They were like concrete. I don't think I'd try a frontal shoulder shot unless I was shooting solids.

I think you fellows are very bad. Displaying all these giraffe photos. I never have felt the urge to hunt giraffe but the attraction is building.

Some lovely animals you have on this thread.

How long is a giraffe rug? Is the neck also included?
