This beautiful bull was shot from + - 120 yards. It was a quartering away shot. The photo shows the entrance wound, and the bullet exited dead center through the off side shoulder. I was using my Model 70 in 375 Ackley Improved, with the 270 grain Barnes XLC coated bullet. The bull only ran about 70 yards after the hit. His horns measured 41 X 41 5/8. I couldn't be happier.

Yes, it was indeed a one shot kill. Even a blind hog finds an acorn once in a while.

Beautifull animal not everyday you break the 40" mark on a gemsbuck bull !

I was indeed fortunate to take a bull like this. However, bulls of this size aren't uncommon in this area. The last evening of the hunt, while looking for Kudu, we saw a herd of 8 Gemsbok, and 3 of the bulls in the herd were at least this size. There was also a female with them that I wanted to take. Her one horn swept back like a Sable's, while the other horn went out to the side, and curled around under her neck. Unfortunately, we ran out of daylight before we could stalk up to them.

Andrew, thank you for your comments. As I've mentioned in some posts when I first joined NitroExpress.com, I don't consider myself a better hunter than anyone else, I'm just very lucky. Good trophies just seem to want to die when I'm hunting.

As far as the photo set-ups, I think Vaughan does do a wonderful job. One of the things I like, is that he carries a 20 litre water container in the back of the hunting vehicle so he can clean up the animals as much as possible prior to getting out the camera. One of the times when we were too far away from the vehicle to fetch water, he sent the tracker back to fetch two canteens of water to clean it up.
