New Rising Bite Project
      #316253 - 10/05/18 07:53 AM

This one isn't a rifle but a 28 bore shotgun. The plan is a rising bite, sidelock, bar-in-wood with a straight grip, splinter forend and percussion-era grip safety and wedge forend retainer.

The barrels, raw tube is on the left and rough filed tube is on the right.

Lump and rib extension blanked

Clamped for silver brazing

The frame, so far

Oh my goodness! Here we go again. We as mere mortals will have the opportunity to see how magic is actually performed by someone of unworldly skill.

Thank you Dewey for starting this thread. We will be watching.

Five stars from the beginning for sure!

Wow!

Makes me feel totally inadequate... lovely

Just needs traditional wire wrap rather than hose clamps for the purists !

Look forward to following this build.

Dewey,

I marvel at your projects and it reminds me to be braver in the projects that I do........... and to get to my shed more often.

If you'd document these builds I'd buy your book...........signed of course.

Keep up the good work. It's inspirational.

The barrels are brazed and jointed to the frame and the knuckle radius is cut. Everything you've ever heard about the rising bite action being the most challenging to build and fit is absolutely true. As far as the hose clamps not being traditional, I agree but they provide a hell of a lot more clamping force than wrapped black iron wire at the temperature at which the breeches are brazed. The blocks on the sides of the barrels are temporarily soft-soldered in place and machined parallel to the lumps and barrel flats. They are to facilitate clamping in the milling machine and bench vise.

Disgusting...I hate people with both skill and talent!

Dewey, You the man. I wish Bob (Birdhunter50) hadn't died on us. He built me a wonderful 577NE, and it turned out very well.....affordable to boot.

Dewey, superb machining and some clever work holding tricks, the latter can often be the most difficult part to achieve especially on something like a double rifle or shotgun where there are so many angles and curves. Really well done.

Sorry for the lack of updates. I'm up to my ears in work and the customers have to come first.

I am rethinking the side pedal. I'd like the gun to have no levers at all and I think I've come up with a way to do it.

The only progress I've made to date is cutting the extractor bed, making and fitting the blank extractor and cutting the forend iron material to fit the frame knuckle.

I will again be working to earn those five stars soon.

All good Ol' mate, got to put tucker on the table first!

Another stunning project. I can sit and gawk at those photos for ages!

No levers at all. The one shotgun I have seen with no levers at all was a Bernardelli folding single barrel where the trigger guard slid back to release the barrel. It was a puzzle for the uninitiated!

Whatever solution is found it will be an improvement on any lever system with those anti aesthetic protruberances on the action. Levers are one of my pet peeves, the other one is ribs.
