Rare Gibbs double .360 hammerless rifle??
      #315895 - 01/05/18 06:42 PM

One of my pals has turned up a very unusual double rifle, in like-new condition apparently. It was made by George Gibbs of Bristol (better known for falling blocks) in about 1880 I reckon. The calibre seems to be .360 No. 3, firing a 215 grain bullet propelled by 35 grains of powder, so not very powerful at all.

It has a Jones underlever but is hammerless, with his own design of action. The tumblers are pivoted on a trigger plate section inside the triggerguard. I have never seen anything like it, but have found one reference to a shotgun with this type of hammerless mechanism.

If someone can send me a PM then I can forward a photo for posting.

Sounds like a Gibbs & Pitt patent action.
You see shotguns on this action occasionally but I’ve yet to see a rifle built on one.
PM sent

Apparently built to the second, Jones action, variant of the British G. Gibbs – T. Pitt patent No.284 of 1873. Because of the low patent use number, 25, I think it was made 1873 -74.

That is nice - power of a .32/40 with the advantage of bullet diameter, it appears. Nice little rifle.

Neat rifle!

Does anyone here have the patent drawings for that action?

I believe that's a shotgun. The rifle hasn't been shown yet.

One very lucky pal of yours HistoricBore, I bet you'll both be chaffing at the bit to get it up & running!
