AspenHill some advise please.

Hello Ann,I have a nearly 15 year old son who wants to get into archery and in particular bow hunting.
He is 6ft 2 ins tall and weighs 90 kgs so is a big lad for his age.
What sort of equipment should he start with and what advise do you have for someone new to the sport.

Well, he's already pretty big and more than likely he is not done growing yet. Most importantly he needs to make sure the bow fits him. One size does not fit all when dealing with compound bows. He will need to try several different makes of bows as well to see which one feels "right" for him.

The best thing to do is go to an experienced bow shop and they will measure his draw length to start. Once they have that number they can start showing him bows. That is the first step, proper fit. Then he tries shooting several to see which one he likes best.

I have always said buying a bow is like buying a puppy. One just picks you out!

Once he picks a bow out there are innumerable gadjets out there to put on the bow to shoot quietly and efficiently. He will need a sight, an arrow rest, a wrist strap, sound dampeners, a quiver, arrows, field points, broad heads, targets to practice on.

Ann,thankyou for your reply and good advice.
My son Lane is now Quoting you which is good as he has listened and is learning from your advice.
He is also impressed that a young lady is a keen bow hunter.

Ann,sorry for not getting back sooner.
Lane is the proud owner of a McPherson compound bow(45-60) and spends a lot of his spare time practising on targets in the back yard.
His accuracy is improving rapidly and now on average he can hit a tennis ball 2 out of 5 times at 20 yards.
He has a problem keeping the arrow on the rest and am wondering iff fitting a whisker biscuit is a good idea.
Any thoughts ?

Sorry to interfere. I think Magic Ann is yet in Africa but she will be soon back.
Good news, Lad is performing very well.

Concerning the arrow leaving the rest and the opportuneness of swaping for a biscuit rest : just my 2 cents.
The biscuit rest will solve the manifestation of the problem but not the cause.
The cause is a torque in holding the riser. I don't think this is due to too powerful a bow for your son is a no weakling. It could be a not perfect position when shooting. Ask an hold hand to look at your son when he is shooting, he'll uncover a detail wrong somewhere.
If he is still shooting at game, a biscuit will enable him to harvest fast. I failed getting a couple of animal because my arrow left the rest, the cause was the adrenaline rush.
