Whitworths are fine rifles. They shoot well and usually have nice wood.

$1200 is way too much for one. $700 or less IMO.

If memory serves me right, the reason the guy is trying to get $1200 is that there weren't that many 458's chambered in them. It was mostly 375's at maybe 3 or 4 to 1. I forgot where I read that but I can always be wrong.

I have a Whitworth in .375 and it is a fine gun. At least it is now after having the mount bases aligned with the barrel and not the action. The thread on the barrel was cut at an angle and the stock made for the 'crooked' barrel angle.

It is however pleasantly styled in the modern classic look, with good checkering, ebony for-end tip, express sights etc.

Extremely accurate. 300 gr Woodleighs 3 shot groups cut almost a calibre hole at 100 metres.

But while one is fine, another may not be so, so check it out well before buying.

I have seen them advertised in the USA for around $700-800.

I have a line on one in Texas for 895.
It is a clean rifle. It has a small
crack at the rear of the receiver that
has been professionally repaired.

In 458 it should sell for $700+, not much more. The 375s are what are hot on the market in Whitworths. People are dumping 458s all over the place right now...The LOTT is HOTT!

The Whitworth Express Rifle is a nice rifle for the money. We sold many and had few problems.

Given the length of the Whitworth action, why would anyone sell one and buy a new rifle when he could easily rechamber the Win to Lott? The gun-buying community sometimes baffles me.

For $1200, I'll happily sell you my Brno 602 ZKK that has been rechambered to .450 Rigby. It already has the M70 safety, Talley peep sights and has a 4 round magazine. I'll even dicker on the price.

The whitworths in .458 are now selling for a premium and they are advertised at $1000 to $1200, they have made a jump in value in the last 90 days, thats for sure...

The Whitworths are std Mod-98 mauser openned up totally in front for the 375 etc. and thats a no no in the gunsmith world as removing that much metal in front weakens the lug recesses supposedly, but they seem to work fine from all accounts and I have never heard of one failing, so for what thats worth...

BUT for $1200 you can get a Ruger 77 Safari and it comes totally decked out for Africa, integral quarter rib, barrel band front sight and swivel, M-70 type safty..A integral quarter rib alone on a custom gun runs from a $1000 to $1200...

The Whitworths are built with the Mk X actions and barrels which are built of quality steel. the barrels tend to shoot superbly and with a little elbow grease the actions work as slick as any other actions. For what you get they are a bargin. Has anyone seen the new Remington 798's ? they should be pretty similiar - at least in the metal work department.

The early reports I have seen on the 798 are not encouraging, but I have not seen a report on the .375 or .458 798. I have not seen any 798 myself.
