Given a choice between an Oberndorf 96 and an HVA 1600 (which I believe to be a modded 96), firing hot prairie 6.5x55 loads, which would be preferred?

Dogfish,
I believe the 1600 was built primarily on the FN commercial 98 action.
Some though may hve been built on FN military actions also.
Tough call, both the FN 98 and the Oberndorf 96 actions are great.

I wasn't sure as the listings show a Hva commercial 98 and an Hva 1600 side by side.

The Oberndorf will indeed be a 98. Husqvarna also used model 98's in the 20's and 30's for sure, along with model 96's and model 94's.
The later 1600, may indeed be an FN action though.

The CIP listing for 6.5x55 is 55,000psi. It is only loaded to really low pressures by the American and Canadian ammo makers.

Even a good condition model 96 will handle 120's at just over 3,000fps. Is that hot enough?

The model 98's, of course will routinely handle & are chambered for rounds loaded to SAAMI and CIP specs running as high as 65,000psi.

Husqvarna 1600 is their own made, modernized version of m98 action. It´s tough action, handles even 9,3x62. Here is one example:

The rifle I'm looking at is one of the far fewer Oberndorf 96's made. Not many around. What attracted me to the HVA custom gun on Chuck Hawk's site describing it as a 96 with 98 features in a slick and sleek package. I find the 96 the nicer looking of the Mauser actions, and the 95 nicest of all...one of my first 'real guns' was a Charles Lancaster 95 (now that I think of it it could have been a 93) built by Ludwig Loewe in .280 Ross.

That's interesting, Dogfish - I did not know about the Oberndorf 96's.

I re-chambered a 96 in good condition once, to 6.5x68. I didn't run the throttle at the top, but still got 3,100fps with 129gr. Hornadys. Got 2 snowshoe hares with one shot with it - that was fun. 120 and 140gr. Speers disintegrated 20 yards in front of the muzzle, but the 129's shot well, go figure.

The action would not extract a loaded cartridge from the chamber, had to pull the bolt a bit to expedite that, but it extracted and ejected fired cases just fine.

That's speaking of the 96 correct, whereas the 1600 has the third lug?

I'd read that Husqvarna used as many 98 features in the 1600 as they could without infringing on FN's patent license.

I have a 1899 dated Oberndorf 96 action at home waiting to be a "someday" project.
Just don't quite know what it wants to be yet!

Yes it has. 1600 is a small ring action with third lug, bolt stop is a small push button.

That is correct. I have never needed the third lug of the 98 and doubt anyone else here has either. It is usually up to .050" short of engaging when the action is locked up, so if the main lugs 'went' it is quite doubtful the little third one would stop the bolt.

Best not to "test" that.

There are cock on opening kits for the 96 if that is important to you, along with side or bolt safeties, seems to me.

IMO the worst detail in m96 Mauser action is very long striking time. There is ways to shorten it but then it needs a new strikers spring too.
