and now something completely different

last day of the old year is coming and you sit there and thinking about the projects still not ready?

well, new year brings another chance to do it right. all starts with a MS 1903 stutzen stock that came from a gunmaker estate. to good to let it go into the nothing it stayed here and in the beginning of 2017 the receiver and the bolt together with rings for the iron sights were found too. the bolthead was broken and complete scrap. it belonged to the full stock, a M 1903 with Made in Germany on the receiver so made between 1938 and 1945 but probably pre war. dont know if Steyr realy had the time to make sporting rifles after 9/1939 maybe they assemble some rifles from parts still having on stock.
with this parts on hand I was thinking about a possible new project to fill a gap in my gunsafe. dont have a 9,5x56 MS and why not? but what to do with the missing parts?

only 3 day later a auction startet for M 1908 replacement parts on egun obviously coming from a butchered rifle. there was all I need also another bolt head so see it as a godsent and won the auction. only things missing is the middle barrel ring and the rear sight. the ring is easy to make and a rear sight will be pop up somewhere.

maybe not everyone will like it but I need a half stock 60 cm long barrel rifle
so the stock was cut where it was possible

the receiver and the bolt

the broken bolt head

the rings for the iron sight

trigger guard, trigger and magazine coming from a M 1908, the actions screws had little damage and are in the hands of my toolmaker now to repair the thread
there is a difference between the 8x56 and the 9,5x56 but I trust in my toolmaker to make it fit.

a 650 mm long, 30 mm diamter .375 Lothar Walther barrel blank was bought

that will end as 9,5x56 mm barrel mixed between the M 1903 and the M 1910 barrel contoure to get into the M 1903 stock. Triebel in germany have the 9,5x56 reamer and lend it.
looking for a Kahles 4x that will be set into the claw mount again.

thats all, good luck with your projects for the next year

Nice project, I should say. But next time you'll find a pre-WWII M-S stock (for short receiver) in affordable price please tell me. My 6,5x57 needs a better one.

An ambitious project! What great fortune you've had in finding MS parts for it.

Count me among those who are cringing at the thought of an eighty year old original Mannlicher Schoenauer stutzen stock being cut, but it's your project. A sixty centimeter barreled half stock is what you desire, and that's what you'll create.

If only there was a time machine available. With that (and $175.00 or so in 1939 U.S. dollars), you could have ordered one 'fresh'. My M1910 takedown has a barrel of approximately 60cm.

Note the various barrel lengths available and 'custom' options.

This is from a 1939 Stoeger catalog (likely compiled and/or printed in 1938).
I believe the '40 Stoeger has the same page.

in fact to find the missing parts 3 days later was not fortune but fate. dont believe in coincidences and have seen it all my life with hard to find things. sometimes there is your name invisible written on something and you will get it.
to cut down the full stock ... I know, it was not an easy decision and thinking allways about pro and con the last year. the 9,5x56 barrel is a little bit thicker in outside diamter and you can rework the M 1903 stock only a little. being over 1,80 meter I like the 60 cm barrel length and feel very comfortabel handling such rifles.
in the end I realy dont need a short stutzen.

it will look very similar like this rifle in the end

a 9,5x56 is rare here but you will find another 1903 every week. in contrast the Model 1910 is for sale one or two times a year. if I made a final bill the new project cost maybe the same BUT a project is allways more fun and you will get such a gun only from my cold dead hands.
if I had the opportunity to get a safe queen or a restoration projekt it will be the last.
this project is not realy hard if there was not the problem to adapt the magazine. I would call it lego for adults but the magazine question give it a real thrill and this makes me addicted like other bungee jumping.

igorrock, I will remember your problem when seeing another stock

Since you all seem to be in the sharing mood, please don't forget that I am looking for a Mauser type M buttplate, and/or M/S buttplates. Spread the word! Thanks. Lance

yes, we need a easy to handle and overseeable corkboard on top of this forum where everyone can write in the parts he is looking for. very simple - only the name and the part needed so you can see it on the first view if someone needs your part.

"If that nose cap needs a new home in Wyoming please PM me. Thanks."

prairie ghost, its possible to send this parts as a registered letter for only 6 euro into the united states, surprisingly cheap because anytime I order only the smallest thing there it came in a little box and cost 40 dollar for shipment.

I need a rear sight elevator for my winchester 1910

looking like this it was probably a default part winchester use as the common sight for all lever actions and also for auto loadings

if you can find such a part I dont ask for the shape. if old and rusty I will clean it here by myself. I would polish your nose cap for the Mannlicher Schönauer and give it a new hot blueing.

Great idea.

For my 'two cents worth',
I could use a pair of original sling swivels for a Mannlicher Schoenauer M1910 Takedown (same as rear swivels on any pre war MS, I believe).

Some fool (me) thought it was a good idea a couple of decades ago to drill them out to accept quick detatch swivels. The only non original feature on an otherwise unaltered M1910, save for the claw mounted Gerard scope (which was done when the rifle was young).

Should be a spiffy little job when finished Lancaster, I gather that the claw mounts won't be a problem over your way?
They would be a very rare thing here in Oz!

soft soldered claw mounts are a little bit more tricky but its one of the minor problems with this rifle project.
allways looking for a 4x kahles scope because this is the brand for a mannlicher schönauer. most times also older kahles scopes selling high here, got this for 55 euro. there are a lot of scope collectors around and they pushing the prices for this old things.

the time goes by

but now it will get a fresh start

barrel is ready and it cost me a fortune

and if you ask me what's the second action? well, looks like a Mannlicher M 95

made from a Walther 404 barrel blank the man who turn the barrels on the lathe thougth I would bring a 404 Jeffery into the M 95.
no!

hope the Mannlicher Schönauer build in 9,5x56 will be ready this year.

The same god of fate smiled on me. I purchased a 1910 with out a magazine at a cheap price assuming I could find one, after searching high and low for months, I had about given up, but tried eBay one more time. One had just been listed, I got it for a reasonable price, it fit perfectly and functions just fine.
