The only reason I can think of is the trend of governments limiting the number of firearms a citizen is allowed to own. Own one receiver with many caliber barrels is the way around this trend...???

I don't know about trying to imitate, in all reality it is an idea that has been around for ages, just coming into 'fashion' now. Most things follow a trend and rifles are no different. For the guy who only wants one rifle it is a good idea, to the rest of us, it is not so appealing as we want as many rifles as we can get our hands on. Afterall, he who dies with the most toys wins!
