45- 110 45- 120 questions
      #30677 - 07/05/05 05:02 AM

Hi,
I have 2 shiloh sharps rifles on the way. One is a 45-110 the other is a 45-120. Is there any BPCR shooters here who could offer input as to shooting/break in, as neither rifle has ever been fired. They were built in New York.
Also any thoughts on brass, bullet and powder choice?
Any thoughts ideas and info would be most welcome and appreciated.
Thanks
Coues
DS

It will be over a year before my Shiloh Sharps arrives...

Shiloh has a company forum full of 1874 Sharps users who can answer any Sharps question you have and tell you anything you'd like to know about reloading those two rounds as well as which components to get.

Hi,
Thanks for the info. I had completely forgotten about the Shiloh forum. I don't think I could wait that long myself lol. Fortunately these were purchased from individuals.
thanks again

Beg, borrow, buy or steel Paul Mathews books on shooting B
P ctg. guns and paper patch loading. They're all good books to have.
: They are necessary reading & teaching literature for shooting 'dirty', that is, for shooting without having to clean the rifle often.
: My .50 3-1/4 and .45 3-1/4 went from 5" to 10" groups at 100 meters to 1" and 1 1/2" groups for 5 shots - dirty -without cleaning for up to 10 rounds minimum. I used tang sights with globed front aperatures, same as my modern target rifle.
: The final test of a lube/bullet/charge combo, as described by Paul, is to remove ALL of the BP fouling with 1 dry patch down the bore. His methods worked in my rifles.

I second Darryl S comments on Paul Matthews books - they are essentials -

Loading the BP Rifle Cartridge - ISBN: 1-879356-20-1
Shooting the BP Cartridge Rifle - ISBN: 1-879356-38-4
How-To's for the BP Cartridge Rifle Shooter - ISBN: 1-879356-41-4

Another great book is SPG Lubricants BP Cartridge Reloading Primer by Mike Venturino & Steve Garbe, available from SPG, a site loaded with good info on Black Powder cartridges and the rifles that shoot them.
