Ersatz Mannlichers?
      #306233 - 11/10/17 07:21 PM

G'day, Gents.

It seems that Mannlicher Schoenauer rifles, and the full stocked versions in particular, gained a reputation in the United States soon after their introduction as being rather foreign and exotic (along with expensive). Thus, a certain romance developed about them that some sought to imitate by giving lesser firearms a 'Mannlicher stock' and other Mannlicher - esque features.

Now, it could be said that these have nothing to do with MS rifles or carbines and that it's only Americans that refer to any full stocked rifle or stutzen as a 'Mannlicher stock'. It was, however, those very Yanks to whom Stoeger offered to zoot up their surplus service rifles from the 'Great War' to at least look like those $175.00 European beauties for a fraction of the cost.

Per usinflationcalculator, one hundred and seventy five 1939 U.S. dollars would have the equivalent of $3.091.07 as of late 2017. It would merely cost today's $847.84 to have the $48.00 'remodel' done.

You could just send your Springfield, Enfield, Mauser '98 or Krag to Stoeger for a 'Peerless Conversion' and they'd do the work up custom, or one could simply buy the bits and do it at home.

From the 1939 Stoeger Catalog, page 319;

Detail views;

There are conversion double triggers on page 326;

And, for the final pseudo 'Mannlicher' touch, a trap door buttplate on page 333;

If you'd like a fresh Mauser already done up in Stutzen form with all the Mannlicher style features (except, of course, for the Schoenauer magazine), Stoeger would gladly accommodate from page 44;

This is also from page 44 of the 1939 Stoeger catalog.

Does anyone have an 'Ersatz Mannlicher' or photos / information pertaining?
