south africa bird book
      #30513 - 04/05/05 10:39 PM

I'm the same guy just needed to reregister due to an update on my own PC.
I am looking for a good quality bird book for the Namibia area.
I know some of the birds just from seeing them a few times but I'd like to be able to identify more of them.
anyone know where I can purchase such a book? Thank you

There is a book called National Audubon Society Field Guide to African Wildlife, published by Alfred A Knopf, Inc. It has the African animals (large & small(, as well as the birds. It's very comprehensive, and the full color glossy photographs are great. If you'r local books store doesn't have it in stock, they can get it for you in a week. You probably can order it from Amazon.com too.

You can also try to get hold of "Robert's Birds of Southern Africa" by Gordon Lindsey Maclean. ISBN 0 620 17583 4

I like "Newmans Birds of Southern Africa" by Kenneth Newman or Ian Sinclairs "Field Guide Birds of Southern Africa". Either one covers most of the birds of Southern Africa. They cover birds only, no mammels. For mammels I use Collins Field Guide Larger Mammels of Africa by Jean Dorst & Pierre Dandelot. There is also a good Pocket-guide to Southern African Birds by Burger Cillie & Ulrich Oberprieler. I'm sure there are many others but hese are the ones I use. I do love birding in Africa.

Wynwood,

Try www.kalahari.net (South African version of Amazon.com) and use their search engine to find ROBERTS BIRDS OF SOUTHERN AFRICA 6TH ED or NEWMAN'S BIRDS OF SOUTHERN AFRICA or WHAT'S THAT BIRD?: A STARTER'S GUIDE TO BIRDS OF SOUTHERN AFRICA

Either of these will cover Namibia as well.

Hope this helps
