Another Walk in the Park
      #304599 - 30/08/17 08:13 AM

Last weekend myself and a few mates from the local Big Game Rifle Club booked one of the "Back Country Hunting" blocks in Litchfield Park and went for a look.

Early action! On the way in to camp, we bumped into a mob of scrubbers so Steve quickly exited the vehicle and set off after them.
It took about a klick and a half to catch them up, probably due in some small part to the blue shirt and thongs(!).
There's more to the story, but eventually a big dark brahman-cross offered a shot and fell to the Merkel .400 double.

The following 2 days were spent stalking creeklines, occasionally climbing the steep stony ridges that separated them, and visiting a couple of distant waterholes to get to know the block. Over a dozen hogs fell to our .400 doubles, the best was this tusker taken by yours truly:

On one occasion we spotted a mob of around 20 buffalo from the top of a ridge, and stalked in on them for perhaps an hour and a half trying to sort out a decent head for Steve's first trophy buff.

The wind was very unpredictable however, and 3 times our efforts were thwarted before they eventually tired of the game and galloped off to the next valley.

Never mind: we'll get them next time!

Amazing from these 'tame dairy cows' ...

Water buffalo can be so different from the Aboriginal lands, coastal or near the coasts in Arnhemland where there are big numbers and many rarely hunted. Compared to places where they have been harassed and harried a lot. Where they run and clear out very quickly at sight, sound or scent of man.

That country where you are hunting, in the 'back blocks' would be a fun place. Planned to do the drive down there when I was in that area ten years ago, but didn't get to it. Interesting there are scatterings of water buffalo there again.

Nice Tony, it was still private land when I hunted there last. What calibre are the .400?? 400/450 (my favourite)

cheers,

Thanks gentlemen.

G'day Chris:
Its a great piece of country and very rewarding to have the 'back country hunting' initiative finally operating. Hopefully NT Parks can be convinced to extend it to other suitable tracts of public land in the near future.

The rifles are both .450/.400 3-inch, nice! Many years ago I toyed with the idea of acquiring Kurt M_'s Jeffery double but it was chambered for the .450/.400 x 3 1/4 and that was simply not 'pukka'. No ballistic difference of course, but it would have annoyed me every time I picked it up!
