Hi Vikram,
sorry for my late replay but I was on vacation for two weeks and did not have access to the web. As someone told you recently, Hartmann & Weiss have no internet page. I visit them just recently ( one week ago ) and I can asure you they are the top of the top. They have just finished a pair of doubles in .375H&H Magnum. The nice thing is you can compare guns of other top gunmakers just in their house because most of the time they have others in for trade. At the moment they have a couple of Holland&Holland double barrel rifles in their house. A H&H .700NE; a pair of H&H 600/577 (REWA cartridge ); a H&H 500/465; and a H&H 375.
But there you can also see other makers. They have an absolute perfect boxlock from Gebr. Merkel build in April 1937 in 475No2. Which they praise with the highest respect. Too be honest this one is flawless in workmanship and nothing like what you see from that company today.
If I can answer your specific questions please do not hesistate to ask. I have the adress, phone number and email available.
What guns do H&W build today:
- bolt action and take downs on small, medium and large Mauser actions
- double barrel rifles any caliber up to .600
- Hagn rifle any caliber up to .600
- Heeren rifles
- side by sid shotguns
- over and under shotguns

Robert

To all that posted

I would like to take this time to thank everyone who posted on this most interesting of topics. I wish, as I am sure all other members do also, to thank them for their experties on this subject.

A special thanks goes out to Mickey for introducing this topic to the forum.

Many interseting and informational posts have been produced by many knowledgeable people. I was wondering if it would be possible for maybe the four, five or whatever number of people who have postd on this topic, the ones that have the most experience of ownership and handling of double rifles, to get together amoung themselves and come up with a consensus of ranking for the best of the best in double rifles. In my opinion, the ranking should consist of three periods in time.
1. Those made before WW II
2. Those made in the years right after WW II
3. Those currently being manufactured.

This is just one mans thought and idea, be it good or bad.

I couldn't agree more. As metallurgy as vastly improved over the preceding years, the way a DR will hold up is totally dependant upon when it was built, what kind of steel was used, and how well the owner is babying it.

Hi Robert,

Thanks for the informative reply.Hope you had a nice vacation and forgive my tardiness in replying to you.I was away from the 'puter for sometime.

I would like to know a bit more about the firearms they make; quality, distinguishing features, pricing etc.Are there any places on internet where I can see a few examples of their workmanship? As stated elsewhere on this forum, one day, I would love to have a 30.06 bolt action rifle made for me.I am in search of that one maker who will make that special rifle, not just a museum piece, but a shooter I can take to the field and the range.

Why 30.06, an allround calibre and I am allowed to keep only one rifle in my country.

If you can, can you kindly provide their address and their email?
Once again, thanks for the reply.Best-
Vikram.

I've only seen a couple of H&W's on the net. Westley Richards had one in .505 Gibbs for a while, but it seems to be gone. Champlin has this little .375 H&H beauty , but of course, not for sale.

This Hagn was built off of an H&W. I saw on the single shot forum a couple of pictures of H&W built Hagns. I have yet to find any pictures of an H&W finished double, though. Hope this helps you.

500 is a nice round number, either followed by "Nitro Express" or by "cubic inch displacement".

Hi Vikram,
yes thanks I had a nice vacation.
Regarding your questions I try to answer them best as possible. The quality of their products is outstanding – but you pay for what you get. Hartmann & Weiss has their main location in Hamburg, they have a second location in Kiel as well. In Kiel it is more or less a toolmakers shop with heavy machines (e.g. spark erosion ) where they do the various actions types. In their Hamburg facility they do barrel manufacturing, stoking and hand fitting and minor parts.

Nothing wrong with your choice of calibre .30-06. It is for sure the best choice you can do under your circumstances. H&W can build you different rifles for this calibre. But I think that the single shots based on a Hagn or Heeren actions is not a good choice because you told you are limited to one rifle only.
On the bolt actions you have different choices. H&W have 3 different action sizes small, standard and Magnum. They build take down where you remove the barrel which is screwed into the action without tooling (again two choices: interrupted thread for quick removal, or full thread). They also build non detachable barrels bolt action rifle.
On a none detachable .30-06 you have a choice of either an intermediate action for a lightweight rifle or the regular action for a normal weight rifle. You have various options for scope mount square bridges and so on.
Because they have their own shooting range in their basement, a customer can test out his new rifle in a very convenient way.
I have actually two rifles and one under construction of them. The two I have are very accurate. The bolt action is a .416Rigby and it shoots 3 in 16mm at 100m. So I can send you pictures of my two rifles which is a bolt action and a Hagn single shot action by email. Please respond if this is ok for you because it mite block your emailsystem.

Their address is:
Hartmann & Weiss
Gunmakers,
Rahlstedter Bahnhofstrasse 47,
22134 Hamburg
Germany

Email: hartmannundweiss@t-online.de

Best regards
Robert

P.S the Hagn rifle in the link that iwantadouble shows is not a finished rifle from H&W – simply this is not their style of work;)
