That wood is very, very nice! Great color, and a wonderful straight grain through the grip area. Where can I get my grubby little mitts on a piece like that?

Great looking stock. I agree with mikeh416Rigby, how does one get a chunk of that.

As far as i know at the moment i cant find anyone else that has heard of black heart sassafrass being used as a stock, even the Tassy boys dont know either--maybe a net run around will do it.The wood is used for high priced furniture so there should be some around.
I have the other half of the blank still but the best cut is the one pictured.

Personally, I think gryphon is holding out on us because he wants to corner the market with that lovely wood.

Seems like this wood is very popular with folks who turn bowls and such. The only sizable blanks I have found are for pens.LOL

That is a striking wood. From the pics of the pens and bowls that I viewed, I can only imagine what a kitchen full would look like.
I have a friend who did all his wood work in his home out of mesquite and iron wood. He did a couple of rifle stocks out of the same and they are beauties.

Mesquite makes great bar-b-que coals too i`m sure i have heard before---(correct me if wrong) bit the same here we have some fantastic native timbers but most of them have gone the way of fence posts or firewood and its really only in the last 20 years that the local product is finally being recognised though i think that for pure indulgence the best presidential grade Euro walnut takes the cake.

You are correct. Mesquite is used for smoking and BBQ. The best smoke flavor , for my taste anyway, comes from the dried beans and pods. I soak them in water just like one would do for wood chips.
