A sad day.
      #30314 - 01/05/05 01:44 AM

For a few weeks now, my cousin has been thinking of putting his German Spanial (AKA Wachtelhund, Deutscher Wachtelhund, German Quail Dog) down due to an incurable, and very serious allergy. The allergy has resulted in skin and fur problems, and an almost cronic ear infection. She was trained to track moose, and was a promising dog had it not been for her problems.

Yesterday I got the phone call where he told me that after some serious thought on the subject, he decided to put Delga down, for both her own good, and for their own sake. Delga was never going to get better, and it was better to do it now when she was 1 1/2 years then put her thru misery for several more.

As he wanted to do it in an environment where Delga would have a "happy ending", he asked if I could come with him and his wife up to their country house where we could create a "hunting situation" for her. I drove up in the rain a bit before him, dug a decent grave for her, and collected some large moss covered flat rocks to put on top.
When they arrived with Delga, his wife took a moose leg (frozen from last season) to create a track for her to follow. After doing this a few time, and some goodbye hugs, my cousin knelt down with the moose leg in his hand a couple of meters away while Delga was told to sit. Thus, all her focus was on him and the mooseleg she expected to receive shortly, and was wagging her tail. I stood right behind her and put an end to her short life with a suppressed 22LR pistol shot thru her brain, down and from behind. She was dead before she hit the ground, and died happy looking at her owner and the juicy mooseleg.

After a while of more sad goodbyes, she was carried over, and gently lowered into the grave which had a layer of green pine branches covering the dirt. More pine branches were put over her, and the grave was filled with dirt before topping it off with the moss coverd rocks. Kind of looked like a miny Viking grave, which in a way was fitting.

Although for the best, it was a sad day.

Erik

I had to put down a family sheep dog of my parents.

It was going blind, deaf and couldn't walk much so when they were away one weekend I put the dog down. They knew I was going to do it. Our other sheep dog knew I had done it and was never the same from that day.

I have only ever had two dogs. My first died at home one cold night when I was away living in Europe for two years which I found sad not being able to say good-bye. But this little dog was a great mate to an earlier sheep dog we had. They were inseparable. When the sheepdog was either shot and run over to cover the crime by someone, or run over and then shot to finish it, I buried it. My little dog was very upset by seeing the corpse. We showed him it so he wouldn't go looking for the sheep dog. He was quite frantic when we buried the sheepdog so took him away.

Dogs do have strong emotions and attachments. Of course.

Erik, Funny you mention a Viking funeral. I have already decided my current mate will have a flaming pyre on a hill in his paradise (hunting grounds) when he one day goes.

I think you and your friend did well for his old mate, Delga. Well done.

Erik,

Very sad, and very well done.

My condolences.

They become a part of us...

I had to put down my beloved old English Setter, Jenny, year before last, as she had breast cancer. She and I went for a walk down the irrigation ditch that always holds a covey of valley quail; I carried my old Stevens 311 sxs 410 with slugs this time. She went on a rock solid point, the kind that made her famous around here with those who had the privilege of seeing her work birds. It was her last point...ever...she and the Stevens are burried below the Russian olive grove where the quail congregate. I still cry when the new puppies and I walk there.

Thank God that your cousin had the love and strength within him to do the right thing...the right way. No finer and truer companion has there ever been, than a man's dog.

Sorry to hear of this, one of mine died today too. I was ready to put him down several days ago but didn't because he looked better than a couple of dogs I had that recovered, so I made the mistake of watching and waiting.

Richard
