1893 steyr 6.5x53R
      #298445 - 05/04/17 07:13 AM

I have done some research through some old posts on this round, and find it to be very appealing. Who if anyone has experience with this particular firearm? Were these originally military rifles? I would think so from the looks, but curious. Do they make a good candidate for a sporter/custom?

My 1893 has always been a sporter I belive, could be wrong.

STEYR 375 FL NE '1893' BOLT-MAGAZINE SPORTING RIFLE. 24in, ramp-mounted bead fore-sight, V-notch with 2 x flip-up leaf rear-sight, rear peep-sight, manual safety, spring clip, chequered semi pistolgrip stock with chequered fore end, steel butt plate, sling eyes

Casper, that is a beautiful rifle. Did you have any work done to it? I like the idea of a .375 FL NE, but the ones I have found are in the x53R. Would it be a possible option to re-do it in the .375 round?

Casper, may I ask for a full picture of that rifle?

The .256 rimmed round makes a delightful little hunting rifle. Loaded with a 160 grain Hornady round nose there's not much will get away from it. Very light recoil.

I've got quite a bit of experience with a .375, it shoots wonderfully with a RL-15 equivalent of cordite (to the sights, correct velocity, low pressure). It feeds nicely in the Steyr clips.I use 270 grain Hornady round noses, but these are getting hard to find. The recoil with an 8 lb rifle is like a 303.

I think about all these sporters were made up from a production over run from the 1892 military contract for Romania, if I remember correctly, but I may not.....

I kind of thought the same Mikerowe, as far as the hunting with this round. I have my m96 swede at the smith right now, and to find this gun for sell really perks my interest. From what I have been able to gather from the forum, the 160 grain RN seems to be THE preferred bullet. That is no issue at all, as it would be a shorter range stalking rifle.
The asking prices for them are 299.00 plus taxes. Is the price decent?

I had an Army Navy retailed Steyr in 6.5x53R. Beautiful little rifle to hunt with. With the 160 Woodleighs worked very well on donkeys so imagine it would be very nice on deer. I moved it on because I don't like to handload and I found the clips a bit of a pain in the arse. I have seen a few of these rifles made up as custom rifles and they definitely have a special look to them.

Joshua, is the rifle you are looking at a sporter or are you thinking of building on it.
I would say at $300, I wouldn't think twice if it is a period sporter.

The rifles I am looking at Huvius are still in what appears to be military form. I found them on hunterslodge.com

Re: 1893 steyr 6.5x53R- HuntersLodge Rifles info [Re: Joshua]

I think the rifles that HuntersLodge are selling are Portuguese Navy Short Rifles, Model of 1896.

Steyr mfg of course and made on the 1893 action.
The contract w/ Portugal included Short rifles and also some Carbines.
The Short rifles are yr/mfg marked on the left side 1896.

I've seen a few at shows around the last year or so and finally picked one up at a decent price ($125) that a dealer had bought at an auction and was clearing it out,,wonder what he got it for.

Another Milsurp dealer saw it and remarked about how 'those were the bunch that HuntersLodge was selling". It never rang a bell w/me till I saw this thread.
I'm just assuming these are the 1896 Portuguese versions of course, but I'll give you a little info on what I know of them from personally seeing a few and owning one.

They were all import marked with hand stamped (individual stamps) heavily into the front left side of the rec'vr ring . CAI was the importer.
The Portuguese crest (King Carlos?)is still visible on those I saw and on mine on the top of the ring but some are faint from wear and use and 'patina' (rust!).
Little or no original blue is left,,some bare metal, some pitting especially UNDER the wood line. (I think these rifles went to Colonial Troops in Africa during or after WW1).
Numbers generally match on the action, bbl and trigger guard. The bolts didn't match on any that I recall. No missing bolt head parts and the bolt faces were relatively clean with little or no pitting around the firing pin hole.

No clearing rods on any of them. The rifles were made w/a handguard and all had one that I saw. Some in better shape than others. The pic on Hunterslodge doesn't show one, but I don't know what the pic is of actually. MAybe they have a completely different rifle and I'm typing this all for nothing!

Bores were all fair to poor. But thats just a 1/2 dozen rifles I have seen. Maybe some are better.
The one I have was poor+ but cleaned up to fair with some brushing. Haven't shot it yet,,maybe a gem awaits!

Stocks are dirty , dented and a few cracks. Butt plates are smooth steel and rusty.

Nice smooth Steyr actions,,all of them, Safetys and triggers all worked as they should.

I bought mine with the intention of building a sporter also. I figured if the 6.5 bbl was no good, I'd send it off to JES rebore to make it a 303 or a 375 if the dia will take it. Cost would be another $275 or so. I'll set the bbl back 1 thread in doing so.
Building a sporter from that point is pretty straight forward.

But I'm still really looking for an original sporter as a 'project gun'. Something to restore that needs some help. That's what I've done for the last 45yrs and feel most comfortable doing. But times running low I'm afraid and maybe this Navy Short Rifle will be that Sporter.

Hope this all helps and didn't just confuse things.

I think I can post some pics of the rifle if you'd like them, maybe help make a decision.

On that Hunter's Lodge page there is an advert for "Zulu Nation" muskets.

Don Heath, now deceased, enquired to me several years ago who might be interested in purchasing and reselling a very large number of muskets, muzzle loaders, ML pistols etc, several hundreds in fact, in more or less pristine condition found sotored in I think it was Zimbabwe (?).

I wonder if these "Zulu Nation" muskets are from that old stache.

I also like the Hornaday 160 grain bullet in my Jeffery sporter.

That is a very nice rifle you have there cordite. I love the looks of that rifle. I am wanting to get something very similar to that myself, as most of my hunting would be more than covered with that cartridge. How do the 160 grain bullets perform out of this round?

Some pics of the 1896 Por.t Short Navy Rifle. I believe this is the same that Hunters Lodge is selling.
CAI marked them as 'M1893 Romanian', but I believe they are are the Portuguese contract Short rifle. They used the same action as the Romanian.

Anyway, not a bad starting point for a sporter I think depending on how much you can do yourself. Bores aren't that great as I said, but a rebore to 35/303 would clean everything up w/o having to set the bbl back. Rebore to 303B would need a set back or you get a slight 2 stepped neck from the old 6;5 chamber in the new 303 chamber.

Why someone notched out the handguard on this one,,, to display the ser# on the bbl perhaps for some inventory reason?, I don't know but can be fixed if restoring or it'll be gone on a sporter anyway. Bolt a bunch of mismatched parts. Action, bbl and triggerguard are matching
