No one watched or commented?
I am interested in what people think of the PH's/Guide's tactics when facing the bluff charge.

Have seen Ivan Carter using similar tactics..having been very close to really pissed off elephants before..that is closer than I feel comfortable with..and feel sooner or later you will pay a price for that..elephants are not to be taken lightly...

Scary or sure. Man - that was a TALL elephant.
When it made the charge, I thought they were toast. Close encounter indeed.

He must of picked something in the eles behavior that indicates the ele is not going to put in a fair dinkum charge. I would be very uncomfortable been that close and not having sights on.

I think the PHs tactics were spot on in that no one including the elephant was hurt. The PH never seems too concerned. Like Rule said he must have picked something up.

Perhaps it was the initial cautious approach. I know nothing of Elephant habits & body language. I'd have shot the blighter.

Personally I never really understand those that want to push things with animals, not just African stuff, but even feeding sharks to get in a frenzy and view them from underwater cages. Even wildlife shows where people walk to get up close or sit to see what the animal will do, whether it be a lion or seal, and then when it does come in too close for comfort it is always ooh ah dangerous animal and they are the hero.
I just leave all animals alone unless I am intending to kill and prefer to observe them at a distance undisturbed in their natural habitat going about their business. I would get nothing out of being in that video and would definitely make that known when on a hunt. Of course the video doesn't show the circumstances leading up to the clip that we see, whether the party just happened upon the elephant up close or deliberately closed in for a photo shoot?
That's my view, others may get a great kick out of close encounters of the animal kind and good luck to them.

The only thing if I was asked to pick is that the main man took his eyes off the bull when he told them (?) to not run.Off long enough for it to be perhaps a tad difficult to get the gun to bear correctly. Anyway good on him, just another day in the office.

Buzz Charlton's Ele Hunting DVD which I can sell to you! And also Bill Stewart's book goes into ele body language.
That ele was not showing true charge body language.
However it can all change in an instant.
And also not all ele will adhere to the body language rules!

I thought all that holding the rifle up was a bit silly. And to me seems pointless. And also meant the rifle was not ready to use if needed.
Supposedly Ivan Carter does something similar.
I do note the ele made a sudden press forward when the rifle was waving in the air, but stopped and turned when the PH showed more aggressive behaviour.
Just observations, from the video. Not from any real or substantial experience.

Yep in the instant his head was turned.. as in the tiger or the croc generally doesn't take you when you are looking at him!
"I thought all that holding the rifle up was a bit silly. And to me seems pointless."
Its a case of any animal that is threatened, make yourself look bigger and thus not so easy.

Or a show for the cameras?
In this case where a pipsqueak man raises his rifle up to look bigger to a very large and very close elephant, it seems to encourage the elephant to make another short bluff charge closer.
Have to have a look at Ivan Carter's examples on video, if I can find them, to see what it looks like when he does it.
I have seen videos of other guys doing it, ie facing down a bluff charge, and there is usually a lot of shouting, and perhaps hand waving. I remember a Don Heath video, plus some recollection of others.
But one can't shoot a rifle held way over one's head by finger tips.
BTW not knocking this PH. Anyone who stands up to an angry ele at close range like this is gutsy.

Opening coats is taught, and works for stopping black bears that are checking you out.
Might work for a grizzly - don't know from personal experience. Hope not to have to find out the hard way, but there are around where I hunt. I just don't pack a .218Bee SS any more when hunting.

Hey JG,
Funny and good one.
Just imagine if someone tried this on camera, was then squashed and the video posted online.
I imagine all the comments would be along the lines of a Darwin award winner ...
When things work some people will praise it ... if the same thing doesn't work the same people (p###ants) will criticise it from the armchairs.
