Did you change your mind on the long trigger guard? Looks very nice!

Bulldog:

It will have the extended trigger guard - in the pictures, according to Butch, he hasn't done it yet.

It's really exciting to watch a custom gun project come together. I used to commission a lot of single-shot and bolt action projects through the '80's. I would visit my gunsmith about once a week to gauge the progress. I know what it feels like. Good luck with this one.

May 2006 - UPDATE on Doc52's .577 NE by Searcy [Re: CptCurl]
      #57162 - 15/05/06 03:44 AM

Ok, another update on the .577 NE 3" Butch is building for us. I received these pictures from the engraver yesterday evening. His name is Mark Swanson from Arizona. He has just about finished with the scroll work and is now starting on the three animals (elephant [penciled outline on the bottom of the action], rhino and cape buffalo).

He is still trying to figure out what might be best for the bolsters on the sides of the action (if anything at all).

I understand this style of engraving isn't for everyone, but based upon what my father and I decided on, we are very pleased with what we saw.

After the engraver is finished with it, it goes back to Butch for finishing and regulating. Hope to have it by the end of June.

As promised, here is another photo from the engraver:

It is done in deep relief and there may be some additional shading done on the elephant's tusks.

More photos in a week or two. The Cape Buffalo is the next animal to be done.

We are getting close to the finish line!

Well, Lee Hooker (LHook7 on AR) visited with Mark Swanson, the engraver of our .577 on Saturday and he was kind enough to forward these photos to me.

Now, I know this type of engraving isn't for everyone - but this is what we wanted and we are very happy with the outcome.

Here are the final photos I got of the action, barrels and forend release and grip cap:

And finally, here is a photo of Mark Swanson and the barreled action. I can't express how pleased I am with Mark's work for us - I would highly recommend him to anyone interested in having engraving done.

Lee literally sent me close to 25 photos of the action and barrels from various angles. I'm lucky enough to have a high speed internet connection at home, or I would be downloading photos until 2008. If anyone wants to see other photos, just send me a note and I will forward them on to you. Most of the photos show up better/more detail in a larger format, but if I posted them, you'll be downloading until next month.

Now, the action is heading back to Butch for finishing. He is going to fit the extended trigger guard and return it to Mark for engraving. Mark said that should only be a one day turn around.

So, HOPEFULLY it will be in our mits as early as mid July! And yes, it is coming to the DRSS hunt in August!

We placed the order for this on April 11, 2005 - shortly after that my father flew to Boron and spent the day with Butch and finalized the rifle.

Now, after 14 months, it is awesome that is it finally heading home!

That’s going to be a beautiful rifle. The days must be dragging by slowly while you wait for it.

Damn! What a beauty.

Don't let any of the guys at the DRSS shoot sleep with her - lest the bore be fouled.

Hope Butch is there, and he brings plenty of 577 ammo. I would love the opportunity to touch off a couple on our deadly native man-eating mesquite trees.

You both have to be proud fathers. This is truly one of a kind.

Extraordinary.

Thanks guys.

Yes, Butch is coming to the DRSS weekend in August. He's said he's bringing some guns and ammo - I have a request in with him to bring his new Classic action - he said he will if he gets one finsihed by then.

The pictures that I uploaded don't do the gun justice - the larger images show a hell of a lot more detail, but would be a bitch for anyone on dial-up. If anyone is interested in seeing other, higher resolution photos, just drop me a note and I'll email them to you.

Yep, pround parents over here. The rifle should be back in Boron early next week for regulating and finishing. Hopefully it will find its way home by mid to late July.

Like a kid at Christmas, Guys! Like a kid at Christmas!

Clark:
Regarding posting detailed pictures: for future reference, why not just post the link, rather than hot-linking straight to the picture. Then it won't slow down the loading of the thread for those on dial-up. Include the file-size, and other forum members can choose whether to down-load the picture or not, depending on their baud-rate.

Some forum-ites on dial-up might still reckon its worth the wait!

Hope this helps.

Marraki:

Excellent point. I will get more uploaded onto my photobucket account today and post accordingly.

Thanks for the recommendation.
