Back-up bolt gun
      #29532 - 15/04/05 03:53 AM

Gang,

I love my doubles, but have been thinking about a custom Left hand bold gun based on the new Montana action. This gun would be basic - almost to the point of utilitarian: matt finish, composite stock, NEGC sights. You get the point.I could build it for about $1200.

But the nagging question is WHAT CALIBER!? I'm really facing a .404 Jeffery right now. Maybe a .425 WR. Any thoughts if it were your gun?

404 Jeffrey - as good as any with plenty of Nostalgia.

One of the 416 if you like 416's.

Also depends what you mean by "back up" and for what ?

In case your double goes down or to back up for DG ?

"When" I go on safari or hunting in general I want to take two guns. If in africa of Australia on DG then my 470 DR and a bolt gun that is of legal caliber. Or if in NA my .375 DR and a bolt gun that I can knock about, drag in the mud, "loose " if needed. But, in either case - if I feel a bolt gun is more suitable at the moment.

The .404 has my heart right now. The .416s just are not keeping up all night dreaming

Bonanza,
I'd be real interested in knowing what the results are. I'd be interested in having a lefty big bore knock around gun. Keep us posted. In my opinion I'd go for a 416 Rigby.

Why dont you talk to Grump about the new 435 PH.
Probably worth a second look.

Until recently I wrestled with the idea of building a .460 G&A for our next year's trip to Tanzania. This project is more attractive now that .375 Ultra brass is easy to get and affordable. I personally think Remington missed the boat by not bringing out their .416 on this case. I owned a .416 Rigby which I lost in a house fire (sad story) and as much as I loved that rifle, each time I pulled the trigger was an economic dilema. The Ultra case would give low pressures in the heat and still best the .458 by 150 fps. I like short barrels on my "serious" guns and I think you could still get 2200 fps with 550 gr. Woodleighs out of a 20 inch barrel.

Bonanza
Take a look at the Blaser R 93 in 416RM.
That way your bolt rifle will take down like your doubles. You could get an extra bbl in 375 so while in NA just take 2 375's. Makes only one kind of ammo necessary.

You are right on the money with the 404. My brother has a FN 404 and a restocked ruger 416 rigby. Both stocked by the same stock maker. The 416 wieghs 1/3 lbs heavier but seems to kick 50% as hard.

The 404 has a little less velocity, but more shootability. Perticularly if you wanted a scope in a QR set up. A plus for leapord and other dusk/dawn hunting.

The other plus is you would just need(!) to get a 450/400J 3" double so you would be able to use the same components and only have to remember one set of Kentucky windage figures.

Remember the only reason to get a bolt is to complement a good double. So only buy bolts that scream for the accisition of a new double.

rell

How does having a 450/400J 3" double and a 404 allow you to use the same components ?

Different case
Different bullet
Maybe Different Powder
Same primer if needed.

You're totaly right .411 to .423, I forgot that until you brought it up. But the rest of my argument still stands.
