Cape Barron geese Flinders island
      #294501 - 30/01/17 08:27 PM

Just returned home from a 5 day trip to Flinders Island. Hunted cape barron geese with Rock jaw tours. Great shooting with birds driven to corridors with shooters spaced across them for some great pass shooting.
Various types of 12 bores used with #2 shells. mostl low but the birds are big and require a solid hit to bring them down. Meat taken and not bad eating.
Broke the shooting up with a bit of fishing, and sight seeing.
Good crew with everyone getting along and sharing the work load. Mixed shotgunning experience amongst the crew with everyone taking birds. Awesome opportunity at a new species.
Heres a few pics cheers Mick

Nice - good sized birds, too.
Great pictures as usual, Mic.

They are a big bird!
Now wonder you need No2's to bring them down with lot's of plumage to get through as well.
Looks like you had a good crowd there Mick, mixed bag on the ages as well.
Really glad to see that everyone got a feed, you just took the breast & thighs to reduce space mate?
Would have certainly been a great trip overall mate, fishing & touring as well - corker!
And having the missus to shoot as well an added bonus for bringing home more tucker!
Obviously a good shot!
Well done to you both

Cool trip. I only recently saw Robert Borsak's photos on a similar trip.

Question - did you and your friends book the entire group, or through some club? Or just attend a mixes group with the shooters sourced from elsewhere or individually?

My question is due to I would love to give it a go. But putting together an entire crew for a booking always makes it harder.

Thanks for posting.

Trip was organised as a group booking. Require 8 for a booking. Good price for 5 days. Ex Melb to flinders , pick up accommodation food shells shooting for the 5 days return to Melb.
Runs a professional business. Good accommodation, food transport, shooting, fishing. Knows the birds and properties.
Great week away. Well worth while doing.
Looking at going again with a group next year and will prepare a bird for taxidermy. cheers Mick

Thanks Mick. So eight persons would be needed for a booking. Needing a full group always makes it harder.

No one I shoot with, or few anyway, I think would be interested enough, certainly not eight persons. Have to find myself a group which needs an extra or two!

Well done on your hunt. And interesting idea to have a bird mounted. Got any other birds already mounted? I know Gary Pegg was reported as being good at birds years ago. Did a lot for a museum at the time.

Actually only a year or so ago, he did two full peacocks. My sambar head came over with two peacocks to his daughters (or a friends daughters - I forget) for her wedding. I picked up the sambar head from a city florist. She had it sitting behind the counter for a few days. Not something normally seen in a florist shop, hey?

Great looking birds and looks like a great trip.

One thing though, it looks like all of the shotguns are defective. The barrels are stacked vertically?

Naaaa - just holding them wrong is all - need to try the Los Angles hold for those pelters - that's obvious eh!

Ive got a crew ready for next year. Waiting for his season to slow down and going to book around the same time. A shooter also took a peacock. Ate very well. Saw a few and pheasants. Also a boar . So plenty of game.
No other birds mounted . Cape barons are pretty cool looking birds, made some enquires about getting them mounted so will see how it pans out... Cheers Mick
