Elephant skin gun cases and slips
      #29421 - 13/04/05 07:30 PM

Posted these on AR for Steve, but we both forgot where they were wanted! Only just re-found the thread. But posting here as well for our enjoyment as well.

Elephant skin gun slips and gun cases. Nice!

Interesting.

Steve,

Would it be an option to send you a panel from ones own elephant hide to make such a slip or case? Making it more "personal"?

Do you know what the rifle slips are lined with?

Cost?

Erik

If you travel foreign just be sure you carry your Cities permit with you or else some sharp eyed young Customs Officer is going to sieze those cases.

John,

Thanks very much for your help with this.......I'm more at home with the technology of a bolt action rifle than I am posting images!

Erik,

Yes we can do that but a lot obviously depends on what you do with your skin after you've shot the Elephant. As the factory is here in SA the easiest thing for us would be if you sent the skin to an SA tannery/taxidermist and from there to me here in White River. Then we can use the same CITES licence chain. If you have it shipped to your home country then you have to get a new export licence etc to ship it to SA and then we use that licence to get the re-export licence.

As each item is hand made we can line it with anything you like. We do offer "off the shelf" items but the whole idea of what we're doing originated with my getting so fed up with seeing clients backskins etc just left as the client couldn't think of anything to do with them......hence the fact that we can hand make individual items to order using the clients backskins if required.

As many forum members will be aware, I'm (actually we) a great believer in best possible quality. We only use the best areas, best PHs, offer the best possible customer service etc etc........This belief in being the best has also been carried onto the leather goods. Even small things such as the brass fittings are all solid brass and not that cheap plated rubbish one so often sees in gunshops etc nowadays.

We've been experimenting with a "cut away" waistcoat type thing that is pretty much finalised and for those hunters who are sick of hanging everything except the kitchen sink on their belt this really is the dogs doo-dahs. I've got photo's of it but they're not really satisfactory - so I'll try to take some better ones and hopefully John will be kind enough to help me post a couple.

That is good to hear. If there is one thing I really hate, it's the plated garbage that is pretending to look like solid brass. The plating usually lasts a whole week...

What would a elephant hide case cost? Just a ballpark figure.

Erik

Erik,

Do you mean to buy or to tan/leather?

Steve,

I was thinking about what a case (and slip) would cost to buy if I supplied the ele hide myself (obviously the tanning etc would be extra). And for that sake, what would a case cost if you supplied the ele hide from your stock?

Erik

Erik,

I'll have to work out a price for you. Elephant is a problem for us to supply to overseas clients out of our stock as the licencing is difficult.....but not impossible....let me work on it for a day or two and I'll get back to you.

Another option is that we can use Buff leather and treat it to look identical to Elephant leather.......some companies do this and pass it off to the client as the real deal.....that's not our style.

Dick M urray of www.murrayleather.com makes top quality products. He can use your elephant or buff hides.
I am going to have him make several things out of my elephant and buff hides.

Steve

Can you ID the three slips again for me? What type of leather?

My guess:

Ostriche;
Elephant;
Buffalo.

?
