303

There is no doubt a .303 or even a .30/30 can be used to kill a water buffalo.Thousands of buffalos have been killed with .303's and .44/40's in the old days. But most of these were shot from horseback or from the back of a Landrover or Landcruiser. A horse can gallop away faster and a Landrover is a harder target for a charging buff than a human on foot. Undoubtably a lot of buffalo also were wounded and escaped. These guys were commercial hide and meat shooters so different rules applied when buffalo were very plentiful.

Nowadays a lot of Aussie hunters still use .30-06s, .300s etc. A lot of them are still shooting them from backs of Landcruisers. Most guides advise or even insist on a .375 H&H Mag powered cartridge.

John, the .303 was a very popular caliber in the sub-continent during the days of the Raj and still is to some extent. For hunting ofcourse the 416 Rigby was very popular.Even now in the tribal area you will find tribesmen carrying the 303 full stock and swear that it is the most accurate rifle ever made. They will use it to hunt anything that moves(including their enemies).

I had a conversation about this very recently.

"They use them to pull carts in Asia", to which I replied "I'll ride in the cart, if you can put the yoke on the Buff"

Gotta admit, it'd be a hell of a ride.

Yeah bugger that! No way I would be shooting at a decent buff with a 'Three-O'.
A mate had one he caught as a calf to fatten up and butcher and to kill it he used a 30-30, I was over his place at the time and didn't have a rifle with me and offered to go home and get the .458 but he wouldn't have a bar of it. Out comes the winny lever gun and he shot it between the eyes at about 15m and all it did was blow the skin off it's head and take a chumk of skull out. The thing was going crazy and he lost a lot of meat from the two front quaters because he shot it 6 more times to put it down... Bad stuff.
Also seen two pig hunters (one with a .308 and other a .270) have to shoot one 3 times each with a finisher required and they were all good shots.
Nothing under .375 for me!
