Browning B25 O/U rifle
      #29317 - 11/04/05 05:44 PM

Has anybody got experience with the double rifles made by Browning on the B25 action?

I’m familiar with the B25 in its normal shotgun form but having seen a B25 based rifle for sale at a reasonable price I’m curious as to how good a rifle they make.

Regards
Webley

Yes, I acquired one chambered in 9,3x74R 23 years ago. It's called the CCS25 (Carabine à Canons Superposés = o/u rifle) Very well handmade rifle based on a 20 ga B25 receiver (differences are that for the CCS, the bottom wall is not hollowed out, sides are thicker overall and heat treatment is adapted to rifle pressures). I've fitted a Swarovski 1,25-4x24 scope in Sühler claw mounts and use it for drive hunting (running game). Mine is very accurate and shoots both bbls. in the same hole at 50 meters. FN-Browning's custom shop still makes them on order (engraved, luxury grades only and priced accordingly) along a newer line of less expensive doubles (CCS525) where rifled bbls. are retrofitted to finished B525 20 ga shotguns and often come with both smooth and rifles bbls. Of course, these can't be compared to the originals, but then they sell at half the price...).

Andre,
I’m impressed with both your photos.

Did you have the mounts fitted to a plain rib or was the rib already machined to take them?

The rifle I’ve seen just has a plain rib with open sights but a scope would be a valuable addition – at least part of the time.

I’m not keen on the B525 series for shotguns never mind rifles. It’s not that they are bad – it’s just that the B25 is a tough act to follow.

Aside from rifles for a moment: Do you have any idea of the going rate for a B25 grade D5 trap gun in Belgium?

Regards
Webley

Webley,
The claw mount bases were handfitted, then soldered on the plain rib. Of course, bbls. had to be reblued and re-regulated (to compensate scope and mount mass). I assisted and, being the pain in the *** I am known for in gunmakers circles, I insisted on moving the wedge and de-, resoldering bbls. until I was satisfied with the grouping (truth is my gunmaker was very patient with me ).
As a free-lance consultant to FN-Browning, I have their latest 2005 info on hand. The B25 Special Trap Evolution 2 retails for 12.165 € (15,800 USD) in plain grade. In grade D5G (= deep engraving, like on my B25 Special Chasse below), the price becomes -pls., take a seat :... 23.427 € (30,455 USD).

Andre....I was in a very nice gunshop on Saturday and they had a used Browning Superposed Diana Grade in excellent condition. I have not shot Brownings for some time and have not followed their value....the sticker price was $18,000 and they don't expect it to last long. I must admit I always liked the Diana over the Midas but .....

Your rifle is beautiful!

The B5 grade engraving (= entry level of presentation guns) on my O/U rifle is more subdued than on my high end shotgun but neat nonetheless :
