9.3mm 293gn TUG projectiles
      #29128 - 08/04/05 07:28 PM

I'm about to start using some DWM 293gn TUG factory loads in my 9.3x64. They came with gun and were probably quite old then and I've been hoarding them for 15 years.

Can someone give me any idea as to how hard these projectiles are compared to, say Woodleigh and Barnes X which are what I've been using to date. Game to be hunted includes pigs, goats and if the gods are really smiling on a poor crippled hunter, a bull camel.

Thanks,

mike

Mike,
I have shot quite a bit of game with 286 gr Woodleigh Softs and Nolser Partitions, in my 9,3x74R. I have shot only one deer with a RWS 293 gr TUG. I shot a doe deer at about 40 yards facing me. The TUG exited the rear ham breaking the upper leg bone in the process. I have not shoot deer in that position with the Woodleigh or the Nosler but I have shot Impala with them facing me and facing away with complete penetration.
The TUG should work on even the biggest camel.

NE450,

Thanks - that sounds promising. The 9.3x64 is the "odd one out" in terms of 9.3 ballistics with about 300fps higher velocity than the others with the 286gn or 293gn projectile. It is interesting (?scary) that ballistics exceed 375H&H but with less than 90% of the case capacity. I've taken pigs and goats with the 250gn Barnes X with good effect and may go back to that load when I've used up the factory ammo - although X bullets are getting really expensive in Oz - $US150/100 in large calibres. Woodleighs are recommended for lower velocities than possible in the 9.3x64 but I've corresponded with Geoff McDonald and he is sure that the 250gn will hold up at the higher velocities.

Did the 293 projectile expand in the doe? I hope that the round will be ok in like framed goats as well as camels and big pigs.

mike

Mike the TUG did expand very good from the wound channel. I purposely waited until I had a frontal shot as I was trying to check penetration.
With the increased velocity of the 9,3x64 I think the 286gr. Nosler Partition would be a very good choice for most game with the 300gr. Swift A Frame top choice for BIG big game, such as Aussie or African buff.

I chrono'd the DWM factory 293g load and got 2,480fps from a 25" barrel. The primers were flowing to fill the primer pockets - I guess this is what happens when when you have ballistics within 50fps and 7gn of the 375H&H with a case with 10 grains less water capacity. Accuracy was excellent - less than 1" horizontal dispersion and 2" vertical at 200 yards. The rifle is a Mauser 66 which has a very reliable bedding system and I suspect that the vertical was my variable holding of the stock.

I'm a bit concerned about pressure in the Western Queensland heat (I'm going next week) so I'll take some 247gn Factory loads which chrono at 2,680fps and show much less evidence of high pressure.

I'll let you know how they perform - (unless all the game is really cooperative and I take everything with the 470 ).

I have used the 9.3 x 64 and have used all the Woodleigh's on Pigs and Buff.

Probably shot close to 20 animals with them.

No problems.

Tugs are the pre Noslers of the day...mostly they blow the front end off sending chards of metal everywhere, and the base will penetrate a tank on a raking shot..small exit holes can be expected and internal damage is abundant..All in all they are a killing bitch and work everytime...I used them on one extended trip to Africa in a 9.3x62 and they performed as described above and killed very well indeed. I would shoot a Cape Buffalo with a 9.3 tug without hesitation and many of our European hunters use that very bullet on Buffalo in their 9.3x64s...

The 9.3x64 and that tug bullet make a one gun-one load safari very doable...
